In India, there are approximately 562 medical colleges under the National Medical Commission (NMC). Admission inthese medical institutions is based on the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) ranks. There are 50.89% government medical colleges and 49.11% private medical colleges in the country.
AIIMS Medical Colleges
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences, popularly known as AIIMS, is a group of autonomous public medical colleges in India that strives to impart quality medical education to numerous aspirants from all over the country.

As of January 2022, a total of 19 AIIMS Colleges in India are functioning currently. Five more AIIMS institutes in India are expected to be fully operational by the end of 2025.
Of all the AIIMS colleges, the one in New Delhi tops the list as per the ranking given by the National Institute of Ranking Framework (NIRF). AIIMS Delhi is also the oldest campus, established in 1956.
Others on the list of AIIMS colleges include AIIMS Jodhpur, AIIMS Bhopal, AIIMS Rishikesh, AIIMS Bhubaneshwar, AIIMS Patna, and AIIMS Raipur.

Maulana Azad Medical College
The MAMC New Delhi, established in 1958, is affiliated to the University of Delhi. The college is named after Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, an Indian freedom fighter and educationist. The college offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in various disciplines. Its courses are recognised by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
The college offers M.B.B.S, M.D., M.S, P.G.D, M.Sc, D.M and M.Ch. The eligibility criteria for MBBS includes 12th with a minimum of 50% marks from a recognised board and it is necessary for a candidate to obtain a minimum 50 percentile in NEET.
Armed Forces Medical College, Pune
The Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) is a leading medical training institute in Pune, in the state of Maharashtra. The college is managed by the Indian Armed Forces. A total of 150 students are admitted for undergraduate MBBS course every year which includes 115 boys, 30 girls and five foreign nationals.
Admission is done on the basis of the National Eligibility and Entrance Test, followed by an interview and medical examination. Ten seats are reserved for ST/SC candidates. Students are not allowed to be married or to marry during the course, and are liable to serve in the medical services of the Armed Forces, on successful completion of MBBS, for seven years.
Jawaharlal Institute of PostGraduate Medical Education & Research, Puducherry
Jawaharlal Institute of PostGraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) was established in 1964 as an autonomous university. It is ranked 8 in NIRF 2019 ranking. Situated in Puducherry, JIPMERoffers MBBS course and has capacity of 200 MBBS seats.
Earlier, the institute conducted JIPMER entrance exam for all the medical courses, but from this year, JIPMER entrance exam has been replaced from NEET 2020.
Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi
Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi was established in 1916. It is a central university that offers various UG, PG and various other courses. It is ranked 6 in NIRF 2019 ranking. In medicines, BHU offers MBBS, MD, M.Ch., MS and DM courses. It also offers BDS and MDS courses. Admission to all the courses is done on the basis of the entrance exam conducted by the university.
King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow
King George’s Medical University (KGMU) is a state university that was established in 1905. It is ranked 10 in NIRF 2019 ranking. KGMU is located in Lucknow. The university offers MBBS, BDS, B.Sc. (Nursing), B.Opt, MD, MS, MDS, MHA and other courses. Admission to MBBS/BDS is done on the basis of NEET.
Madras Medical College & Government General Hospital, Chennai
The college was established in 1853 and is the third oldest medical college in the country. Established by Sir Fredrick Adams,the building is made of red bricks and has been classified as a Grade A Heritage Building. The college is affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. It is funded and managed by the State Government of Tamil Nadu.
The admission to MBBS courses is strictly on the basis of the NEET Entrance exam ranking.
University College of Medical Sciences, Delhi
University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS), Delhi was established in 1971. This Medical college in Delhi is affiliated with the University of Delhi. UCMS is associated with Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital which serves as the training hospital.
MBBS, BDS, MDS, MS, Diploma are the courses offered here. The institute aims at imparting excellent medical teaching as well as healthcare facilities.
Seth GS Medical College, Mumbai
Founded in 1926, the Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College (GSMC) and the King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital are amongst the foremost teaching and medical care institutions in India. The medical college provides training to students in undergraduate, postgraduate and super-speciality medical courses. It has a total intake of 180 MBBS seats.
University College of Medical Sciences, University of Delhi
Established in 1971 as a Constituent College of University of Delhi, University College of Medical Sciencesruns various medical and paramedical courses. It has annual admission intake of 150 MBBS seats. It is known for its quality research, National ranking 7th based on the number of publications in PubMed indexed journals.
BJ Medical College
Ahmedabad Medical School was created in 1871 and it became affiliated with the Civil Hospital in the city of Ahmedabad. In 1879, Sir Byramjee Jeejeebhoy donated Rs.20,000/- and the school was renamed after him as BJ Medical School. Later, the school got affiliated with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Bombay in 1917. By 1946, the school obtained affiliation with Bombay University and then achieved higher status and started providing admissions for diplomas.
The college have the capacity of accommodating 250 students for MBBS course.
To get admission in MBBS, a student must have completed 10+2with the Science stream and have passed with at least 50% marks.

Christian Medical College, Vellore
Christian Medical College, Vellore widely known as CMC, Vellore is a private, minority-run medical school, hospital and research institute. The college has always occupied a top slot among the list of best private medical colleges in India for MBBS. Kasturba Medical College, Manipal
Kasturba Medical College, Manipal is a medical college based in Manipal, Karnataka. Established in 1955, the college is considered as one of the first self financed Medical institutes of our country. It is one of the few medical colleges whose MBBS degree is recognised across several countries. It is a constituent part of MAHE, Manipal founded by Dr. TMA Pai. Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute(MGMCRI), Pondicherry
Famously abbreviated as MGMCRI, it is the important medical college in the country which was established in 2001.
