J&K Weather Update: Light Snowfall Likely Over Higher Reaches, Wet Spell Expected from January 22

Srinagar, January 15:
The Meteorological Department has issued a detailed weather forecast for Jammu and Kashmir, indicating a series of western disturbances that are likely to bring cloud cover, light rain, and snowfall over different parts of the Union Territory in the coming days. While most areas will witness generally cloudy skies, a significant wet spell is expected between January 22 and 24, which may impact travel and daily activities.

According to the forecast, January 15 will remain generally cloudy, especially towards the evening. On January 16, the weather is expected to stay cloudy with light rain or snowfall at scattered places across Jammu and Kashmir.

The weather on January 17 and 18 will remain partly to generally cloudy, with light snowfall likely at isolated higher reaches. However, conditions are expected to intensify slightly on January 19 and 20, when generally cloudy skies will prevail along with light rain or snowfall at scattered to fairly widespread locations. During this period, a few higher reaches of North and Central Kashmir may receive moderate snowfall.

On January 21, the region will continue to experience partly to generally cloudy weather, with light snowfall over isolated higher-altitude areas.

A more active weather system is forecast between January 22 and 24, bringing generally cloudy conditions with light to moderate rain or snowfall at most places. The Meteorological Department has also warned of the possibility of moderate to heavy rain or snowfall in a few districts of the Chenab Valley, Udampur, Reasi, and South Kashmir on January 23 and 24. This wet spell could lead to temporary disruptions in traffic, especially on mountain roads and passes.

After this active phase, January 25 and 26 are expected to be partly cloudy with light rain or snowfall at isolated to scattered places, indicating a gradual improvement in weather conditions.

Advisory Issued ⚠️

The department has also issued an advisory warning that moderate to dense fog is likely to continue over the plains of the Jammu Division for the next two days, which may affect visibility and road travel.
Travelers, particularly those planning journeys during January 23 and 24, are advised to plan in advance, remain cautious, and strictly follow traffic and administrative advisories in view of the wet and potentially disruptive weather.

Residents, tourists, and transport operators are urged to stay updated with official weather bulletins and take necessary precautions during this changing weather pattern across Jammu and Kashmir.
