The NEET UG 2024 exam, embroiled in the paper leak case, is still under serious scrutiny after reports of large-scale cheating and malpractice. Acting on this, the National Medical Commission has ordered the suspension of 26 MBBS students who had indulged in malpractices during the examination.

In addition, the Commission has also cancelled the admission of fourteen students for the 2024-25 academic session, the official sources confirmed in a PTI report.

The decision follows investigations by the Central Bureau of Investigation and other agencies into suspected malpractices, including a leaked question paper.

The National Testing Agency, which conducts the test, has also debarred 12 candidates for a few years and suspended the candidature of over 200 students.

After months of legal scrutiny, the Supreme Court closed proceedings on NEET UG 2024 last month after the Centre agreed to implement most expert panel suggestions to improve the exam system.

WHAT DID THE OFFICIALS SAY?

“Due to the serious nature of these breaches and the risk they pose to the reputation of medical education, the National Medical Commission has instructed the relevant medical colleges to suspend the 26 MBBS students involved without delay,” the source stated.

A government official privy to the information revealed that the National Testing Agency conducting the test has barred forty-two applicants from sitting for the NEET-UG for three years — 2024, 2025, and 2026.

Nine have been barred for two years. 215 have also had their status suspended subject to investigation.

The National Medical Commission, in its notification to the colleges, mentioned that students who were found to be involved in the malpractice should be suspended immediately.

“The Commission is firm in its opposition to any academic dishonesty,” the source stated, and added that steps are being taken to maintain fairness and order in the upcoming examinations.”
