Good News for Passengers: Direct Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express from April 30 – Check Route, Timing & Full Details

In a major boost to connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, direct rail services between Jammu and Srinagar are set to begin from April 30, 2026, with the extension of the Vande Bharat Express up to Jammu Tawi. The semi high-speed train will significantly cut travel time to under five hours across a distance of 266.66 km, offering a faster, safer and all-weather alternative to road travel, which is often disrupted due to landslides and snowfall along the Jammu–Srinagar highway. The inaugural special service (Train No. 02601) will depart Jammu Tawi at 10:30 am and reach Srinagar at 3:05 pm, marking a long-awaited milestone in the region’s rail connectivity.

Direct Jammu–Srinagar rail link finally becomes reality

The extension of the existing Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat service to Jammu Tawi fulfils a long-pending demand of residents, tourists and businesses. The train will now directly connect the Jammu region with the Kashmir Valley without the need for transfers.

Inaugural run schedule and key details

According to Northern Railway, the inaugural special train will operate with a modern 20-coach Vande Bharat rake, a significant upgrade from the earlier 8-coach configuration.

  • Departure from Jammu Tawi: 10:30 am
  • Halt at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra: 11:54 am to 11:59 am
  • Arrival at Srinagar: 3:05 pm

An additional operational halt will take place at Bijbehara for crossing purposes. Officials clarified that the regular timetable will be announced separately.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is scheduled to flag off the inaugural service, with Union Minister Jitendra Singh also expected to be present at the ceremony.

Travel time slashed, reliability improved

The new service is expected to reduce travel time between Jammu and Srinagar to less than five hours, a sharp improvement compared to road journeys that can take significantly longer due to difficult terrain and unpredictable weather.

The direct train is also being seen as a dependable alternative, especially during winters when highway closures are frequent. Officials said the service will ensure punctuality, safety and year-round connectivity.

Special winter-ready technology for extreme conditions

What sets this Vande Bharat service apart is its advanced “winterisation” technology, designed specifically for the harsh climatic conditions of the Kashmir Valley.

Key features include:

  • Self-regulating heating cables to prevent freezing of water pipelines
  • 1800W silicon heating pads in water tanks
  • Heated bio-toilets and auxiliary systems
  • Embedded heating element in the driver’s windshield to prevent fogging
  • Heating systems in air dryers to maintain braking efficiency

These upgrades ensure smooth operations even in sub-zero temperatures, making it the first such train in India equipped for extreme winters.

Boost to tourism, trade and local economy

Officials believe the direct Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat will provide a major push to tourism and economic activity in the region. Improved accessibility is expected to attract more visitors to the Kashmir Valley while also facilitating smoother movement for traders, students and daily commuters.

The increased capacity – 20 coaches instead of 8 – will also allow more passengers to travel comfortably, addressing high demand on the route. The extension was initially planned for March 1, 2026, but was put on hold due to “unavoidable circumstances”, according to Railway Board communication at the time. The rescheduled launch on April 30 now marks the formal rollout of the long-awaited service.
