Srinagar, Dec 28, 2025:
The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has issued an extended weather forecast for Jammu & Kashmir, indicating a spell of cloudy weather along with light rain and snowfall activity across several parts of the Union Territory over the coming days. The department has also issued an advisory for travellers and transporters, urging them to follow traffic and administrative guidelines, especially during potential snowfall spells.
Weather Forecast: Key Highlights (28 December 2025–10 January 2026)
28–29 December: Partly to Generally Cloudy
Most parts of Jammu & Kashmir will experience partly to generally cloudy skies, with dry weather conditions expected during this period. Day temperatures are likely to remain near normal or slightly below normal across the Valley.
30 December: Light Rain/Snow Likely at Scattered Places
The weather department has predicted generally cloudy conditions with light rainfall and snowfall at scattered locations, particularly over higher and middle mountain ranges. Plains may witness overcast skies and a dip in temperature.
31 December–1 January: Moderate Snowfall Expected in Higher Reaches
The New Year’s Eve period is expected to bring light rain/snow at many places across J&K.
Importantly, moderate snowfall is likely over some middle and higher reaches of North and Central Kashmir, which may temporarily affect road connectivity in hilly regions such as:
- Gulmarg
- Sonamarg
- Kupwara belt
- Gurez valley
- Areas of central Kashmir mountain ranges
Travellers heading to hill destinations for New Year celebrations are advised to plan accordingly.
2 January: Light Rain/Snow Over Scattered Areas
On January 2, the Met Centre expects partly to generally cloudy weather, with light precipitation at isolated to scattered places.
3–8 January: Mostly Partly Cloudy
A relatively stable weather pattern is expected during this period with partly cloudy skies and colder nights due to reduced cloud cover.
9–10 January: Partly to Generally Cloudy
The second week of January is likely to begin with partly to generally cloudy conditions, with no major weather disturbance forecast at the moment.
Fog Alert Issued for Jammu Division
The weather office has warned of moderate to dense fog over isolated parts of Jammu Division during the next two days. This may:
- Reduce visibility
- Affect highway movement
- Increase risk of mishaps during early morning and late evening hours
Motorists have been urged to exercise caution.
Advisory Issued for Public & Travellers
The Met Centre Srinagar has advised:
- Travellers and transporters to strictly follow traffic and administrative advisories, especially on mountain routes such as Srinagar–Jammu National Highway and roads leading to upper reaches.
- Those visiting snow-bound tourist destinations should remain updated on weather conditions and road status.
What This Means for Residents
With cloud cover returning and chances of snowfall increasing, day temperatures may drop further, while nights may continue to witness freezing conditions across Kashmir Valley. The upcoming snowfall spell may also help improve dry weather-affected water resources and renew winter tourism activity.
The coming week is expected to bring light to moderate winter activity across Jammu & Kashmir, particularly in the higher reaches. Residents, tourists, and travellers are encouraged to stay updated with official weather bulletins and follow advisory instructions for safe movement
