JKBOSE Panel Recommends Grace Marks for Students Over Out-of-Syllabus Questions

JKBOSE subject expert committee recommends grace marks to students

Srinagar, Mar 2: In a significant development, the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) has woken up to the complaints about the out of syllabus questions faced by the students in their class 10th and class 11th annual examination.

The committee subject experts have recommended grace marks to be awarded to the students against the questions which were out of syllabus in the class 10th and 11th class examination. A top official told Greater Kashmir that amid the hue and cry made by the students over out of syllabus questions in class 10th and 11th examinations, the JKBOSE has constituted a team of subject experts to review the issue.

“After the issue came to limelight, various subject experts in Kashmir and Jammu division were consulted for their opinion. After taking their feedback, it was established that some questions in a few subjects of class 10th and 11th were out of syllabus,” the JKBOSE official told Greater Kashmir. This newspaper earlier reported about the issue and highlighted the plight of students who faced questions from deleted portions of syllabus in their question paper.

The complaints were received from class 10th students that some questions in their Social Studies paper were wrongly put in paper while the 11th students in hard and soft zone areas faced out of syllabus questions in their Mathematics paper.

On February 25, the class 11th students complained that questions carrying 16 marks were put off the syllabus as the paper setter picked the questions from the deleted portion of the syllabus. Some students in class 10th also faced out of syllabus questions in their Urdu question paper. “An official report was submitted by the committee of subject experts to the Secretary JKBOSE after it was established that the questions in some papers were out of syllabus while in other subjects, questions were wrongly put in the question paper,” the official said.

He said the committee in its official report has recommended award of grace marks to the students against the questions which were wrongly put in paper or were out of syllabus,” the official said. He said JKBOSE will provide “good and genuine” grace marks to the students against these out of syllabus questions.

“We will not let the students face any trauma. The committee has recommended Grace marks in English, Urdu and Social Studies of class 10th and mathematics of Class 11th. The Grace marks will be genuine,” the official said. Besides giving relief to the students, the JKBOSE has also decided to take action against the paper setters for putting out of syllabus questions or questions with errors. Generally, such paper setters are debarred for lifetime. He is never called again for paper setting. But given the sensitivity of the issue, these people should be penalised with hefty amounts so that such mistakes never happen in future. The matter is being discussed at an official level,” the official said. (Greater Kashmir)
