With limited seats in MBBS, this trend is raising concerns among students. “What is the point? If 67 students are scoring full marks, what is the level of competition that we are contesting against. It only means that a student cannot get into AIIMS Delhi even with 719 out of 720 marks!” says a student. Many have taken to twitter to raise concerns.

The concerns are valid. AIIMS New Delhi, the leading medical college in the country has a total of 125 MBBS seats. Out of these, only 46 are for General Category. If reports are to be believed, this means that 67 students who have scored perfect score will not find place at the top medical college.
The concerns further intensify as students loose marks. Single digit slips in the total marks are adding up to a slip in ranks by hundreds and thousands. As mentioned earlier, with the trend, it is now expected that the counselling will stop for students with as high as 600 marks. A score of 687, for instance is getting a rank of 5412. This would clear out at seats in at least Top 50 Medical Colleges in the country. In 2023, a score of 687 would have translated to a 980 AIR.

The extremely high cut off of NEET 2024 result has also led to concerns over the NEET Paper Leak. With many students reportedly scoring full marks and the cut off raising by at least 50 marks for the General Category, many people of twitter are asking if the result was declared purposely before the plea was filed in Supreme Court.
It is important to point out the a plea was filed on June 1 in Supreme Court alleging that the May 5 NEET paper was leaked. While the same was earlier denied by NTA, the student has approached the SC, asking for re-conduct of the paper. The plea was expected to be listed in front of the vacation bench of the SC.
Also, NTA was scheduled to release the result by June 14. The unexpectedly early declaration of the result has raise the concerns among students.
It is important to point out here that even though the rumours of paper leak are unfounded, the fact remains that the competition for the students is steadily rising. With just about 1 lakh MBBS seats available in the country and over 24 lakh students appearing for the examination, the high cut offs limits the chance of a fairly bright student to get a seat in a medical college.
