Tulip Garden to have 75 varieties this year, two more imported from Netherlands

‘1.7 million tulips to bloom, garden to open after March 15, parking capacity increased’

Srinagar, Feb 25 (KNO): After a record-breaking footfall last year, the authorities here have increased the parking capacity to accommodate more rush of visitors at Asia’s largest Tulip Garden, which will be thrown open for visitors after March 15 this year.

With 1.7 million bulbs, the famous Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, located between Dal Lake and the Zabarwan hills will have two more varieties imported from the Netherlands this year.

Javid Masood, In-charge Tulip Garden told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), that the preparations are in full swing and the garden will be thrown open any time after March 15.

“At present, 100 gardeners and casual labourers are making tireless efforts to complete all the processes and make the garden ready for the public,” he said.

Given the record-breaking footfall of visitors last year, Masood said the parking space has been increased at the garden to accommodate more rush of visitors this year. “We are expecting a huge footfall of visitors this year also,” he said, adding that 4.5 lakh visitors visited the garden last year in just 30 days. “We are prepared to accommodate the record number of visitors this year as well,” he said, adding that the people can avail the benefits of e-tickets.

He said 1.7 million Tulip bulbs with 75 varieties will bloom in the garden as two more varieties have been imported from the Netherlands this year.

The varieties have been increased from 73 to 75 this year, Masood added.

Pertinently, Tulip Garden earned a spot in the World Book of Records (London) as Asia’s largest in 2023. In 2024, the garden experienced an extraordinary surge in tourism, with a staggering 4.45 lakh visitors flocking to witness its vibrant blooms, including approximately 2,000 from foreign shore—(KNO)

Jal Shakti Department (PHE) Casual Labourers, Daily Wagers Protest in Budgam, Demand Minimum Wage Implementation & Regularization

Budgam, Feb 25 (KB): Hundreds of casual labourers and daily wagers of Jal Shakti Department (previously Public Health Engineering Department) staged a protest in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Tuesday, demanding implementation of the Minimum Wages Act and regularization of their services.

The protesters, as per news agency Kashmir Bulletin, carrying banners and shouting slogans, urged the government to fulfill long-pending promises of fair wages and job security.

The protestors expressed frustration over what they called years of neglect and financial hardships due to meager salaries and lack of job stability.

“We have been working tirelessly for years, ensuring the supply of drinking water to thousands of households. Yet, we are forced to survive on paltry wages, far below the minimum wage standard,” said one of the protestors.

The agitating workers also criticized the authorities for delaying the implementation of the regularization policy, leaving thousands of daily wagers in uncertainty despite repeated assurances.

“We demand immediate implementation of the Minimum Wages Act and a proper roadmap for regularization,” said another protestor, adding, “Our families are suffering, and we cannot continue like this.”

The protesters while urging the government to look into the matter at an earliest, in the meantime said that if the things are not taken into consideration they will soon launch a widespread protest.

The protestors later on dispersed peacefully from the venue. (KB)

After 10th, Class 11th Students Fume as JKBOSE Puts Three Out-of-Syllabus Questions Carrying 16 Marks

After 10th, Class 11th Students Fume as JKBOSE Puts Three Out-of-Syllabus Questions Carrying 16 Marks

Committee Examining Errors, Grace Marks to Be Given Where Needed, Will Ensure Students Won’t Suffer: BOSE Official

Srinagar, Feb 25 (JKNS): The Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) is once again facing criticism for repeated mistakes in board exams, with students raising concerns over out-of-syllabus questions in multiple subjects.

After the recent controversy over an out-of-syllabus question in the Class 10 English and Urdu papers and a mistake in SST paper, Class 11 students have now expressed outrage after finding three out-of-syllabus questions carrying 16 marks in their Mathematics exam.

The latest error occurred on February 25 in the Class 11 Mathematics paper, where students found three questions—Q23 (4 marks), Q29 (6 marks), and Q30 (6 marks)—from topics that were removed after syllabus rationalization. These included Polar Form of Complex Numbers, Solutions of Trigonometric Equations, and Arithmetic Progressions.

“If these topics were removed, why is JKBOSE still including them in the question paper? These repeated mistakes are unacceptable and affecting our results,” said a frustrated student.

On February 24, the Class 10 English paper had its very first question from Speak Up—a poem that had been officially removed from the syllabus.

“How can a deleted chapter be included in the paper? This was a five-mark mistake by JKBOSE,” said an aggrieved student, Abrar.

On February 20, Students appearing for the Class 10 Urdu exam paper were shocked to find that options 2 and 3 of Question No. 10, worth five marks, were from a deleted section of the syllabus.

On February 18, students appearing for the Class 10 Social Studies exam found a multiple-choice question (MCQ) with incorrect answer options.

The question, “Who was the first President of the Indian National Congress?” had none of the four provided options as correct. The given choices were: (A) A.O. Hume, (B) Mahatma Gandhi, (C) S.N. Banerjee, and (D) Lala Lajpat Rai. However, the correct answer is Womesh Chandra Banerjee.

Meanwhile, Joint secretary in Board of School Education (JKBOSE) Suraj Rathore told news agency JKNS that a committee of experts is looking into the issue and grace marks will be provided where necessary.

“Yes, we have convened a committee of experts to identify errors. Wherever they are found, we will take corrective measures. I assure students they will not suffer”, he said.

“Center sequencing is there, let it come, we will issue a notification with regard to that”, Rathore said.

This is not the only issue students have faced recently. JKBOSE has already come under fire for the delayed issuance of admit cards to some students, which caused panic just before exams. Additionally, errors in textbooks, including misprinted content, have further raised concerns about the board’s efficiency.

Adding to the uncertainty, JKBOSE is currently without a permanent head. The tenure of its chairperson ended on January 25, after which the Jammu and Kashmir government granted a one-month extension, which expired yesterday, February 25. With repeated controversies and no clarity on leadership, students and parents are demanding urgent reforms in JKBOSE’s functioning. (JKNS)
