FFRC Issues Final Notice to 660 Private Schools in Kashmir Over Non-Compliance With Fee Regulation Rules

0

The notice further states that strict punitive action may follow in case of continued non-compliance

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Committee for Fixation and Regulation of Fee of Private Schools (FFRC) has issued a final notice to 660 private schools across the Kashmir division for failing to submit the required documents related to the regulation and determination of their fee structures.

According to the notice issued by the committee headed by Justice Sunil Hali (Retd.), several private schools have persistently failed to furnish the necessary files and documentation despite earlier communications from the authorities. The committee stated that this non-compliance raises serious concerns and violates statutory provisions governing fee regulation in private educational institutions.

The notice states that under Section 20-C(3) of the J&K School Education Act, 2002, the committee is empowered to restrain any private school from collecting fees from students until formal approval of its fee structure is granted. Additionally, Rule 8(2) of the J&K Private Schools Rules, 2022 mandates that no private school shall revise or collect any fee without prior approval from the committee.

Terming the continued failure to submit documents as a wilful violation, the FFRC said such actions appear to bypass regulatory oversight intended to curb the commercialization of education.

The committee has granted a final window of 15 days to the managements of these schools to submit complete fee regulation files to the FFRC office. It warned that failure to comply within the stipulated period will lead to an immediate restriction on the collection of any type of fee, including tuition, annual and transport charges, until further orders.

Parents and guardians have also been advised to verify the approval status of the school’s fee structure before making any payments after the 15-day deadline.

The notice states that strict punitive action may follow in case of continued non-compliance, including suspension of recognition of the institution and imposition of fines ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,00,000 for repeated violations under the relevant provisions of the law.

JKBOSE Extends NMMS Scholarship Application Deadline for Class 8 Students in J&K

The Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) has extended the last date for submission of application forms for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMS) Examination 2025–26. According to the notification, students studying in Class 8 (VIII) in government schools across Jammu and Kashmir will now be able to submit their applications until March 31, 2026.

Deadline Extended for NMMS Applications

The extension comes as a continuation of earlier notifications issued on December 1, 2025 and January 22, 2026 regarding the NMMS examination. The authorities have decided to extend the deadline to allow more eligible students to apply for the scholarship scheme.

The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMS) is a centrally sponsored initiative aimed at supporting meritorious students from economically weaker sections. The scheme encourages students to continue their education and reduces dropout rates at the secondary level.

Submission Process for District Authorities

The notification further states that the Chief Education Officers (CEOs/DNOs) of all districts in Jammu and Kashmir are responsible for submitting the complete application forms along with required documents and district-wise databases.

These documents must be submitted to the CDR Wing at Bemina, Srinagar, or Rehari Colony, Jammu within seven days after the closing date of the notification.

About the NMMS Scholarship Scheme

The NMMS scholarship program provides financial assistance to deserving students studying in government schools. The scheme primarily targets students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and aims to motivate them to pursue higher education.

Students who qualify for the NMMS examination receive annual financial support, helping them continue their studies from secondary to higher secondary levels.

Not everyone can secure a govt job; explore innovation, become entrepreneurs: CM Omar to youth

Says agriculture, horticulture contribute significantly to J&K’s GDP

Jammu: Calling upon youth to become job creators instead of job seekers, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said agriculture and allied sectors hold immense potential for startups, value addition and entrepreneurship programmes in the region.

Addressing a Startup Outreach Programme organised under the Jammu and Kashmir Competitiveness Improvement of Agriculture and Allied Sectors Project (JKCIP) at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology Jammu, the Chief Minister, according to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said, “Agriculture, horticulture, fisheries and apiculture together form a strong economic base of the region.”

He said, “There is a misconception that Jammu and Kashmir’s economy is driven only by tourism. The fact is that agriculture and horticulture contribute significantly to J&K’s Gross Domestic Product.”

CM Omar told students that government employment opportunities are limited and not everyone can secure a government job.

He said the youth must explore innovation and entrepreneurship, particularly in sectors where the region already has natural strengths. “We do not have resources like coal, iron ore or oil to set up large-scale industries. We have to build industries around what we already possess, and agriculture offers that opportunity,” he said.

The Chief Minister stressed the need for value addition to make agriculture viable, noting that shrinking land holdings and market uncertainties have made traditional farming less sustainable.

Citing dairy as an example, he said only a small percentage of milk produced in Jammu and Kashmir undergoes processing, unlike states such as Gujarat where value addition is significantly higher. Processing milk into products such as paneer and other dairy items increases income and creates employment, he added.

He also highlighted opportunities in meat processing, fisheries, honey production, floriculture and horticulture, saying small innovations can open new markets. Referring to a young innovator who improved flower packaging to enhance shelf life, he said such ideas can generate viable enterprises.

Encouraging students to take risks, Abdullah said failure should not deter aspiring entrepreneurs. Drawing a parallel with global entrepreneur Elon Musk, he said setbacks are part of innovation and learning.

The chief minister assured institutional and government support for young entrepreneurs and called upon them to harness schemes such as JKCIP and the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme to modernise the sector.

On the occasion, he launched 808 Kisan Khidmat Ghars aimed at strengthening grassroots agricultural services and felicitated startups and farmers’ producer organisations for their achievements—(KNO)

2,000 J&K Umrah Pilgrims Stranded in Middle East as Airspace Closures Disrupt Flights

Around 2,000 J&K Umrah pilgrims stranded in Middle East: Travel operators

‘US–Israel–Iran tensions trigger airspace closures, mass cancellations’

Srinagar: Around 2,000 Umrah pilgrims from Jammu & Kashmir are stranded in different parts of the Middle East following widespread flight cancellations triggered by the escalating US–Israel–Iran tensions, which have disrupted air travel across the region.

Representative of Hajj & Umrah Companies in Jammu and Kashmir Parvez Ahmed Bhat while talking to reporters here, according to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said, “Hundreds of pilgrims from the region are currently stuck in Makkah, Madina and Jeddah after airlines suspended or delayed flights due to the prevailing regional situation.”

Bhat said the crisis has affected both pilgrims who had already travelled for Umrah as well as those scheduled to depart from Srinagar and other parts of the Union Territory.

“Nearly 2,000 pilgrims linked with different travel groups from Jammu & Kashmir are affected by the ongoing situation. Many are waiting for fresh flight schedules after airlines cancelled services due to the security situation in the region,” Bhat said.

He added that the disruption has also caused heavy financial losses to travel operators, as agencies had already booked hotel accommodations, transport and flight tickets for multiple pilgrimage groups during the ongoing Ramadan season.

According to Bhat, several tour operators have had to extend hotel stays for pilgrims in Saudi Arabia, while simultaneously dealing with cancellations or postponements of upcoming travel batches.

“The travel trade is suffering significant losses as bookings, hotel reservations and logistics were arranged in advance. The uncertainty has created serious operational challenges for companies as well as pilgrims,” he said.

Meanwhile, international flight operations across parts of the Middle East have been disrupted in recent days amid heightened regional tensions, leading to partial airspace closures and flight cancellations.

The situation has affected travellers and pilgrims from several countries, with many reported stranded in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states after airlines either suspended flights or rerouted services due to security concerns.

Officials said Indian diplomatic missions in Saudi Arabia are monitoring the situation and coordinating with airlines and travel operators to facilitate the safe return of stranded passengers once flight operations stabilise.

Meanwhile, families of several pilgrims in Kashmir have expressed concern over the delay in return flights, particularly for elderly travellers and have urged authorities to ensure their safe and early repatriation.

Travel operators have also appealed to the authorities to issue clear advisories and extend support—(KNO)

MEA monitoring situation in Iran, Indian Embassy in UAE issues advisory

Airstrikes near Urmia University trigger panic among Indian students

JKSA urges EAM Jaishankar to relocate students to safer places

Srinagar, Mar 05: Amid escalating tensions in parts of the Middle East, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it is closely monitoring the situation involving Indian nationals in the region, while the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi has advised Indians in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to remain vigilant and follow local safety guidelines.

In an advisory issued on Thursday, the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi urged Indian nationals in the UAE to remain calm and adhere to instructions by authorities.

“In view of the prevailing situation in the United Arab Emirates and the region, all Indian nationals currently in the UAE are advised to remain vigilant, calm, adhere to the safety guidelines of the UAE authorities and follow official advisories issued from time to time,” the embassy said in an advisory available with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO).

The advisory noted that due to exceptional circumstances, UAE airspace and regular scheduled flight operations remain temporarily suspended.

It says, however, limited non-scheduled flights operated by Indian and UAE airlines have commenced to multiple destinations in India in coordination with UAE authorities, subject to operational approvals.

The embassy said stranded Indian nationals may avail these flights by contacting their respective airlines. It also noted that the UAE Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security has announced a waiver of overstay fines for visitors and others whose visas expired after February 28 due to the prevailing circumstances.

According to the advisory, the Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate General of India in Dubai, along with their outsourced passport, consular and visa services, continue to function normally.

Indian nationals facing any issues have been advised to contact the embassy’s 24×7 helpline, including the toll-free number 800-46342 and WhatsApp number +971 543090571, or send queries through email to [pbsk.dubai@mea.gov.in](mailto:pbsk.dubai@mea.gov.in) and [ca.abudhabi@mea.gov.in](mailto:ca.abudhabi@mea.gov.in).

Meanwhile, reports of airstrikes in the northwestern Iranian city of Urmia have triggered panic among Indian students studying at Urmia University, including several from Jammu and Kashmir.

The Jammu & Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) said explosions occurred close to the university dormitories, with students reporting that a recent strike took place nearly 300 metres from their boys’ hostels, shaking the buildings and causing alarm among residents.

In a statement, JKSA National Convenor Nasir Khuehami said the association has been in contact with several Kashmiri students who described the situation as tense and frightening.

“The situation on the ground is extremely volatile. Students are frightened and anxious, and fighter jets can reportedly be heard frequently, creating an atmosphere of constant fear and uncertainty,” he said.

The association has urged External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar to take immediate steps to facilitate the relocation of Indian students, particularly those from Jammu and Kashmir, to safer locations until evacuation becomes possible.

The Government of India, the advisory added, continues to attach the highest importance to the safety and well-being of Indians abroad and is closely monitoring developments in the region—(KNO)

Sedentary Lifestyle, Junk Food and Screen Time Fuel Rising Obesity in J&K: Doctors

0

Srinagar: Health experts in Jammu and Kashmir have raised concern over the rising prevalence of obesity, stating that unhealthy dietary habits and sedentary lifestyles are the leading causes behind the growing health problem.

Doctors said obesity occurs due to an imbalance between calorie intake and energy expenditure, where individuals consume more calories than their bodies burn. This leads to excessive accumulation of body fat, which significantly increases the risk of several chronic and life-threatening diseases.

Speaking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Dr Javid Ahmad Reshie, a doctor at the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir (DHSK), said obesity has emerged as a major public health concern as it is closely linked with a range of non-communicable diseases.

“Obesity occurs when a person consistently consumes more calories than they burn through daily activities and physical exercise, resulting in excessive fat accumulation in the body,” he said.

Dr Reshie explained that obesity substantially increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases. “Excess body fat contributes to high blood pressure (hypertension) and elevated cholesterol levels, which significantly raise the risk of heart disease and stroke,” he said.

He further noted that obesity also affects metabolic health. “Excess fat in the body leads to insulin resistance, which raises blood sugar levels and can eventually result in type-2 diabetes. Obesity can also cause non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which may progress to severe liver damage if not addressed,” he added.

The doctor also warned that obesity is associated with an increased risk of several cancers. “Studies have shown that obesity can increase the likelihood of developing cancers such as breast, colon and pancreatic cancer,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Muzamil Abdullah said that modern lifestyles characterised by prolonged sitting, lack of physical activity and excessive screen time are major contributors to obesity.

“A sedentary lifestyle not only affects physical health but also takes a toll on mental well-being. Research indicates that prolonged inactivity is linked with anxiety, depression and cognitive decline,” he said.

Dr Muzamil added that lack of physical activity has also been associated with a higher risk of certain cancers, including breast and colon cancer.

He said obesity is not caused by lifestyle factors alone. “Genetic predisposition, hormonal disorders such as hypothyroidism and Cushing’s syndrome, along with stress, depression and emotional eating also play an important role in the development of obesity,” he explained.

According to doctors, obesity can lead to several health complications, including osteoarthritis due to excessive pressure on joints, mental health issues such as depression, low self-esteem and anxiety, and increased mortality rates because of associated illnesses. They stressed that adopting healthier lifestyle habits is key to preventing obesity and its complications.

Doctors advised people to consume balanced diets rich in fibre, proteins and healthy fats, while reducing the intake of processed and junk food. They emphasised the importance of engaging in at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day, maintaining proper sleep patterns, managing stress effectively and undergoing regular health check-ups to monitor weight and detect underlying conditions early.

Data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) indicates that the prevalence of overweight and obesity is significant in Jammu and Kashmir, with around 20.5 per cent of men and 29.4 per cent of women reported to be overweight or obese.

Additionally, a study conducted in Kashmir found that 15.01 per cent of the population was obese, including 7.01 per cent of men and 23.69 per cent of women, highlighting a higher burden among women in the region—(KNO)

OTP Issue Disrupts NEET-UG 2026 Registration in Kashmir, AIMSA Urges NTA to Intervene

0

Srinagar, March 6: The All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) has urged the National Testing Agency (NTA) and Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda to intervene in resolving difficulties faced by students in Kashmir while registering for NEET-UG 2026.

According to AIMSA, many students in the region are unable to complete their online registration because they are not receiving OTP verification codes, which are required to finalize the application process.

The association said the problem appears to be linked to prevailing network restrictions, preventing a large number of aspirants from successfully completing their applications.

With the registration deadline of March 8 approaching, AIMSA has appealed to authorities to urgently address the issue so that affected students do not lose the opportunity to appear in the national medical entrance examination.

AIMSA Vice President Dr Mohammad Momin Khan said several NEET aspirants and their parents have been contacting the association regarding the problem.

“Many students are unable to complete the application process due to OTP failures. Authorities must intervene immediately to resolve the issue so that students can register before the deadline,” he said.

AIMSA representatives said timely action is crucial to protect the academic future of thousands of medical aspirants from Kashmir, urging authorities to ensure that technical or connectivity issues do not disadvantage students from the region.  [KNT]
