J&K exempts 64 government colleges from CUET for 2024-25 admissions Students in far-off colleges put at a disadvantage by CUET-based admissions
The Jammu and Kashmir administration has exempted 64 government colleges from using CUET scores for admissions during the 2024-25 academic session. The decision comes after a low student response to CUET-based admissions in these colleges last year.
According to a notification by the Higher Education Department (HED), the colleges exempted from CUET are located in remote areas with difficult topography and limited infrastructure. The department said that CUET-based admissions would put students in these colleges at an undue disadvantage.
The colleges will instead conduct admissions centrally through the e-SAMARTH portal, based on the marks obtained by students in their class 12th board examinations.
The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) is a national-level entrance exam for admission to undergraduate programs in central universities and other participating institutions. The exam was first conducted in 2023.
The Jammu and Kashmir administration’s decision to exempt certain colleges from CUET is likely to be welcomed by students in these areas. However, it is not yet clear whether this exemption will be extended to future academic sessions.
Here’s a breakup of the colleges exempted from CUET :
- 35 government colleges of Jammu Division
- 29 Government Colleges of Kashmir Division
