Western Disturbances to Maintain Hold, Monsoon Delay Possible in Jammu and Kashmir

Western Disturbances to Maintain Hold, Monsoon Delay Possible in Jammu and Kashmir

Over the past few years, the arrival of the Southwest monsoon in Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a trend of early or timely onset. In 2021, the monsoon made its arrival on the 13th of June, while in 2022, it arrived on the 30th of June. The usual monsoon onset date in this region is around the 28th of June.

In the upcoming 10 days, the persistent presence of Western Disturbances combined with the movement of cyclone Biparjoy across parts of India is set to hinder the arrival of monsoon showers in northern parts of the country. Furthermore, the likelihood of any low-pressure systems developing in the Bay of Bengal and moving towards central India before 24th June remains significantly low. As a consequence, the anticipated onset dates of the Southwest monsoon are likely to be pushed towards the first week of July.
The probability of an earlier-than-normal onset of the monsoon in Jammu and Kashmir is extremely low (10%). There is a slight possibility (30%) that the monsoon onset will occur around the usual time, but there is a very high likelihood that it will happen after June 28.

Hajj 2023: In a first, 115 women from J&K embark on pilgrimage without ‘Mehram’

Hajj 2023: In a first, 115 women from J&K embark on pilgrimage without ‘Mehram’

Raja Syed Rather

Srinagar, Jun 10 (KNO): A group of 115 women from Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday left for Jeddah to perform Hajj pilgrimage, but without the company of a male guardian (Mehram).

As per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), this marks a monumental shift in traditions.

Mahram is the Arabic word used to describe the male relative of a woman for whom it is Haram (prohibited) for her to marry. When a woman gets married, her husband also becomes her Mahram.

According to the majority of Muslim scholars, a woman must travel with her Mehram. However, some scholars believe that women who wish to perform Hajj without a Mehram may do so if she is in the trusted company of a group or if the travelling routes are safe.

Many believe the shift underscores the progress being made in ensuring equal opportunities for women in religious practices.

Meanwhile, the women from various districts of J&K on Saturday bid farewell to their families and friends amid an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation. Dressed in traditional white garments, they embarked on this spiritual journey, ready to embrace the profound spiritual experience that lies ahead.

Executive Officer, Jammu & Kashmir Haj Committee (JKHC), Dr Shujaat Ahmad Qureshi told KNO that the first flight accommodated 320 pilgrims while the second took 319.

Today 639 pilgrims embarked on the pilgrimage while one was dropped due to illness, Dr Qureshi said. “In today’s flights, 115 female pilgrims travelled without mehram,” he added—(KNO)

Maintaining electricity supply as per power availability: KPDCL

Maintaining electricity supply as per power availability: KPDCL

‘No fresh power schedule announced’

Raja Syed Rather

Srinagar, Jun 10 (KNO): Stating that no power curtailment schedule has been announced in the Valley, the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) on Saturday said that the electricity is being supplied as per the availability.

Talking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Chief Engineer, KPDCL, Javed Yousuf Dar said that there has been no circular with regard to the power curtailment in Kashmir. “The KPDCL has not announced any power curtailment,” he said when asked about the reports regarding two-hour power curtailment in morning and evening.

However, he said that the KPDCL has been managing the electricity supply to the people according to the availability.

“The electricity is being made available by JKPCL and we have been maintaining the electricity as per the availability and thus we have to go for the power curtailments because of the power availability issue at present,” he said.

He further said that there was no information about how long the issue will continue as it is the prerogative of JKPCL.

Pertinently, the consumers across Kashmir complained of erratic power cuts across the Valley, saying that there is no power schedule as the electricity is being snatched frequently, forcing them to reel under darkness.

On June 05, KNO reported that Jammu and Kashmir has recorded a 25 per cent sudden cut in the power supply, a move that has triggered a “temporary power deficit in the UT.”

Officials’ privy to the development had said that the J&K’s power supply has been cut by 25 per cent without “any clear reasons.”

Kashmir region, as per official sources will face the brunt of the power shortage given the soaring temperatures in Jammu, where the power department is resorting to minimum possible cuts—(KNO)
