NEET-UG Results: Grace Marks Given To 1563 Candidates Will Be Cancelled, Retest On June 23, Centre Tells SC

The Centre on Thursday told the Supreme Court that the grace marks of 1563 students who appeared for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate 2024 (NEET-UG 2024) will be cancelled and they will have the option to reappear for the exam. The court, after hearing the Centre’s decision, said that a re-exam will be conducted for the 1,563 students.

“A subsequent Committee has made recommendations after deliberations which are placed before us. According to recommendation, scorecards of 1563 candidates will be cancelled and stand withdrawn. A re-exam will be conducted for these 1563 candidates. The results of those who don’t wish to appear will be based on their actual marks without compensatory marks,” the Vacation Bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta said.

“For those who appear for re-test, the May 5 scores will be discarded,” the court added.

The Centre on Thursday told the Supreme Court that it has decided to cancel the grace marks awarded to1563 NEET-UG 2024 candidates in NEET-UG 2024 results. Centre adds that these 1563 students will be given an option to take a re-test or their result will be calculated on marks obtained without grace marks.

The Supreme Court on Thursday also ordered that all petitions alleging paper leak and unfair means to be tagged together and be heard on July 8.

The court while dictating order said that it has been told that the NTA committee has decided that the score cards of 1563 students will be cancelled and they will be granted opportunity to give a retest.

The retest will be notified today itself and the process will be complete before counselling starts. Retest is likely to take place on June 23 and results out before July 1.

Will NEET Be Cancelled? Supreme Court To Hear Pleas Challenging NEET UG 2024 Result Today

NEET 2024 Controversy: The Supreme Court will hear three petitions filed after the NEET results today. One of these petitions is filed by Alakh Pandey, the founder of Physics Wallah.

The Supreme Court will hear three petitions today seeking the cancellation of the NEET UG 2024 and the conduct of a retest due to alleged irregularities in the grant of grace marks. A vacation bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta will take up the petitions. The petitioners also seek a stay on the counselling process.

Among these petitions is one filed by Alakh Pandey, the founder of Physics Wallah, who claimed that the NTA’s decision to award grace marks was “arbitrary. Pandey collected representations from about 20,000 students, showing that 70-80 marks were randomly awarded as grace marks to at least 1,500 students.

Alakh Pandey’s petition is against the alleged random awarding of grace marks by the National Testing Agency (NTA) to over 1,500 candidates..

Pandey has requested the Supreme Court to establish an expert panel under its supervision to “inquire into the examination process and results of NEET (UG) 2024.”

The second petition was filed by SIO members Abdullah Mohammed Faiz and Dr. Shaik Roshan Mohiddin, seeking to recall the NEET-UG 2024 results and conduct a fresh exam. The petitioners alleged arbitrariness in the granting of grace marks, pointing out that marks as high as 718 and 719 out of 720, secured by several students, were “statistically impossible.” They claimed that the NTA’s grant of grace marks was a malafide exercise to provide “backdoor entry” to certain students, rather than compensating for “lost time.” The petitioners also raised suspicions about the fact that 67 students from one particular center obtained full 720 marks.

In this petition, the petitioners also sought a stay on the counselling for NEET-UG 2024 admissions until an investigation into allegations of a paper leak was completed. They further requested the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the alleged malpractices in the conduct of the exam.

The third petition was filed by NEET candidate Jaripiti Kartheek, challenging the award of grace marks as compensation for the alleged loss of time during the exam. He argued that the “normalization formula” for awarding grace marks should only apply to the number of questions left unanswered in proportion to the lost time, given that each question has equal weightage and assumes equal time distribution for answering each question.

On Wednesday, the National Testing Agency (NTA) informed the Delhi High Court that it will seek to transfer all matters related to alleged irregularities in the NEET UG 2024 results to the Supreme Court.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the Delhi High Court bench, presided over by Justice Neena Bansal Krishna, that the NTA will file a transfer petition before the Supreme Court to consolidate and schedule all related cases for a joint hearing.

Mehta stated that following the NEET-UG exam results, several petitions have been filed across various High Courts in the country. To ensure consistency and avoid conflicting judgments, the NTA will request the Supreme Court to hear all such matters together.

Notably, the NTA conducted the NEET examination on May 5 across 4,750 centers and was taken by around 24 lakh candidates. Although the results were expected to be declared on June 14, they were announced earlier on June 4, as the evaluation of the answer sheets was completed ahead of schedule. Allegations of a question paper leak and the granting of grace marks to over 1,500 medical aspirants have sparked protests and led to the filing of cases in high courts as well as the Supreme Court.

Upcoming Major Administrative Reshuffle Expected in JK

Major Administrative Reshuffle expected in JK within days

Srinagar, Jun 12 (KNO): In the wake of a newly formed central cabinet, the Jammu and Kashmir administration is poised for a significant administrative reshuffle.

Anticipated in the coming days, this shake-up will involve substantial transfers within the civil administration, affecting key postings in departments such as Public Works (PWD), Finance, and Education.

Reliable sources told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the primary objective behind this reshuffle is to enhance the efficiency and coordination of various critical departments in the region. “The union government closely monitors the functioning and progress of these departments, especially since the erstwhile state’s transition to a union territory.

Following a recent cabinet meeting at the Prime Minister’s office on June 10, a directive has been issued to the Jammu and Kashmir administration, emphasizing the need for prompt service delivery and the expeditious clearance of pending projects,” sources privy to the development told KNO.

A communique was sent to the Jammu and Kashmir administration following a cabinet meeting held at the Prime Minister’s office on June 10, urging immediate measures to ensure the prompt delivery of government services and the establishment of a robust mechanism to clear pending projects. “Many developmental projects had been stalled due to the imposition of the Code of Conduct during the Lok Sabha elections. These projects are now being expedited at a rapid pace,” sources divulged.

It was informed further that several senior bureaucrats, who currently lead important departments, are likely to see changes in their postings. Performance evaluations will guide the decision-making process, ensuring that the right officials are placed in key roles. JKSCERT Seeks Input for Conducting In-House Exams for 8th Class

JKSCERT seeks inputs to conduct in-house exams of 8th class

Srinagar, Jun 12 (KNO): The Jammu and Kashmir State Council of Educational Research and Trainings (JKSCER) has sought inputs from concerned authorities from both regions in conducting the in-house exams of 8th class from the ongoing academic session.

Joint Director Central at JKSCERT said that it has sought inputs from its divisional offices for the conduct of in-house Middle Standard assessment for current academic session 2024-25.

According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), JKSCERT in a communique said that under the NEP-2020, “The aim of assessment in the culture of our schooling system will shift from one that is summative and primarily tests rote memorisation skills to one that is more regular and formative, is more competency-based, promotes learning and development for our students, and tests higher-order skills, such as analysis, critical thinking, and conceptual clarity.”

“JKSCERT conducted the Summative assessment of class 8th centrally at SCERT level as per the Student Assessment and Evaluation Scheme,” it reads.

The Council however said that “The conduct of the examination not only stretches over a long period of time thereby reducing the number of actual instructional days as envisaged in RTE Act 2009 resultantly increases the anxiety and stress level of students.”

“In this backdrop this Council is in the process of revisiting the Student Assessment and evaluation scheme wherein preference shall be given to the conduct of in-house assessment of class 8th on the pattern of CBSE Schools across the Country so as to avoid high stakes and stress among the young learners,” it reads.

The Council accordingly directed the concerned to share their candid and specific inputs with regard to conduct of in-house or school based class 8th assessment for current academic session. “The same may kindly be submitted within a weeks’ time positively for its onward submission to Administrative department.”—(KNO)

NEET UG Result 2024: NTA Addresses FAQs and Clarifies Compensatory Marks Calculation

The FAQs were released to clarify the allegations and concerns regarding the conduct of the exam, rewarding of marks, compensatory marks and more.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) released a set of frequently asked questions (FAQs) regarding the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test NEET (UG), the results of which were declared on June 4, 2024. The FAQs were released to clarify the allegations and concerns regarding the conduct of the exam, rewarding of marks, compensatory marks and more.

Compensatory Marks Calculation

Many applicants and stakeholders had raised concerns over the compensatory marks that were awarded to a few students who appeared for the NEET UG 2024 examination due to the loss of time at their exam centres.

NTA mentioned that few Writ Petitions were filed by the candidates of NEET (UG) – 2024 before the Hon’ble High Courts for loss of exam time in the NEET (UG) – 2024 exam at few Centres. Accordingly, a Grievance Redressal Committee was formed which looked into the concerns and verified CCTV footage from the concerned exam centres. To compensate for the loss of time for such candidates, they were compensated with compensatory marks.

“The loss of examination time was ascertained and such candidates were compensated with marks based on their answering efficiency and time lost, as per the mechanism/ formula established by the Hon’ble Apex Court, vide its judgment dated 13.06.2018 in W.P. 551 of 2018. 1563 candidates were compensated for the loss of time,” mentioned NTA in the release.

Role of NTA

Regarding the role of NTA in NEET UG 2024, NTA said that the agency’s responsibility is to conduct the examination and declare the result based on the eligibility criteria provided by NMC. “The candidates submitted their category as per the National Category List and based on the same the result has been declared. The NTA has provided All India Rank to the candidates and the admitting Authorities will draw a merit list based on All India Rank for the seats of MBBS/BDS, etc. falling under their jurisdiction. When candidates apply to their State, they will mention their category as per the State Category List. State Counselling Authorities will accordingly make their Merit List. The same is the case with the domicile,” replied NTA.

NEET UG 2024 was conducted in 13 languages (Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu) for more than 24 lakh candidates in 571 cities including 14 cities outside the country Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Bangkok, Colombo, Doha, Kathmandu, Kuala Lumpur, Kuwait City, Lagos, Manama, Muscat, Riyadh, Sharjah, and Singapore.
