CUET examination centre issue likely to get resolved on Friday: KU

Have taken up the matter with NTA, JK admin and Higher Edu Deptt: Prof Khan

Bhat Imran

Srinagar, May 18 (KNO): The University of Kashmir (KU) Thursday said that the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) examination centre issue will get ‘resolved’ on Friday.

Speaking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Vice-Chancellor of the varsity Prof Nilofer Khan said that it has taken up the CUET examination centre issue with the National Testing Agency (NTA) and Higher Education Department.

“We have taken up the matter with NTA, Higher Education Department and JK administration. Most likely it will get resolved on Friday as both the stakeholders have given us the positive response,” Khan said.

She further said that the Higher Education Department has also informed us that it has already taken up the matter with NTA and most likely, it will get resolved on Friday.

Pertinently, hundreds of aspirants of Common University Entrance Test (CUET) have expressed antipathy against the NTA for designating their examination centres outside the Jammu and Kashmir in contrary to their preferred venues.

The aspirants said that their preferred examination centres for the entrance test were changed from Jammu and Kashmir to other states by the examination conducting agency NTA.

Earlier, a number of NET aspirants of previous session have alleged that they could not appear in the entrance test—blaming the examination conducting agency for changing their preferred venues from Jammu and Kashmir to other states—(KNO)

128 posts of lecturers vacant in schools in Kupwara, reveals RTI

‘Dearth of teachers affect smooth functioning of edu institutions’

Tasaduq Hussain

Kupwara, May 18 (KNO): An RTI application has revealed a record number of lecturers are vacant in Kupwara district.

The RTI was filed by a Law student Tajamul Islam seeking details about the vacancies of lecturers from Director School of Education Kashmir (DSEK) said a total of 128 posts of lecturers are vacant in 18 Higher Secondaries and 12 High Schools in the district.

Official sources told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), that there are a total of 54 Higher Secondary Schools, 102 High Schools, 700 Middle Schools, and 894 Primary Schools functional in the remote district of Kupwara.

The RTI said that only 18 Higher Secondary Schools out of 54 replied to the RTI. It also revealed that only 12 out of 102 High Schools shared the vacancy figures.

Official sources revealed that the pending vacancies have left a vacuum in educational institutions. “It definitely impacts the smooth functioning of the schools given that teacher-pupil ratio is important. Also, it is very vital to have subject-specific lecturers available in the required numbers,” the official sources said.

These posts, officials said, are being subsidized by subject-specific RETs and General line teachers. “This has led to a shortage of teachers in elementary schools. People over the years, mainly students, have expressed their resentment given the dearth of lecturers,” they said.

In 2018, the School Education Department (SED) Jammu and Kashmir put a freeze on the recruitment process. In 2019, several employees were recruited based on an old advertisement—(KNO)

KU Vice-Chancellor takes up CUET exam centre issue with UT administration

Srinagar, May 18: Vice-Chancellor University of Kashmir Prof Nilofer Khan on Thursday took up the matter related to setting up of examination centres in Kashmir for the candidates of Common University Entrance Test (UG-CUET) with senior authorities in the J&K UT administration.

The Vice-Chancellor spoke to Principal Secretary, Higher Education Department, J&K Government, Shri Alok Kumar, and urged him to further take up the matter with the National Testing Agency (NTA) so that examination centres for the CUET (UG) are set up in Kashmir and the aspirants do not have to travel outside the Valley to sit in the said examination.

The Vice-Chancellor said that setting up examination centres at convenient locations in the Valley will ease the candidates, especially those coming from far-off places and underprivileged sections of society, and save their travel time which they can appropriately use to focus on their studies.

The Principal Secretary assured that the matter has already been taken up with the NTA.

The VC hoped for an early resolution of the matter in the larger interest of the candidates who are presently preparing for the examination. (Greater Kashmir)

Designated exam centres outside J&K:
Kashmiri students likely to skip CUE test

Srinagar, May 18, KNT: Hundreds of Kashmiri students this year are likely to skip Common University Entrance Test (CUET) as a major hurdle for these students is to appear for this test at different examination centres outside Jammu and Kashmir.

If the National Testing Agency doesn’t designate examination centres in Kashmir Valley, these students are likely to skip the test.

The Common University Entrance Test, earlier known as Central Universities Common Entrance Test is an all-India test being organized by National Testing Agency for admission to various Undergraduate, Integrated, Postgraduate, Diploma, Certification courses and Research Programmes in 45 Central Universities of India.

Two days back National Testing Agency issued an exam city intimation slip that shocked the Kashmir-based students whose examination centres have been designated outside the erstwhile state. The entrance test will take place on May 25, 26, 27 and 28 and if students are believed, they won’t appear if NTA doesn’t change its decision.

“I am not financially sound. The examination centre for my daughter has been designated at Bhatinda Punjab. Naturally, she will miss it as I can’t afford the airfare,” Inayat Ahmed, a resident of Hajin Bandipora told the news agency Kashmir News Trust.

The ‘diktat’ from NTA triggered a protest in Valley. Distressed students have been appealing to authorities to impress upon the NTA to set up examination centres in Kashmir for Kashmiri students.

“This is ridiculous, tantamount to harassment. Students have gone into depression. Don’t know why this happens to Kashmiri students only,” said an agitated parent saying he can’t send his daughter outside Jammu and Kashmir.

Parents as well as students said that domestic flight fares are at par with international rates. Students from poor backgrounds can’t afford to travel outside Jammu and Kashmir.

They called upon Lieutenant Governor of J&K Manoj Sinha to promptly intervene and address the issue by establishing examination centres within Kashmir itself.

Meanwhile, several political leaders including Ghulam Nabi Azad, Syed Altaf Bukhari, GM Shaheen and others have made a fervent appeal to LG Manoj Sinha to intervene in the matter and save the future of the students. [KNT]
