Weather Update – Kashmir Cold Wave Persists: Srinagar Logs Season’s Coldest Night at Minus 5.4°C

Srinagar, Dec 14: As Kashmir remains in the grip of a relentless cold wave, Srinagar registered its coldest night of the season at a bone-chilling minus 5.4°C.

An official from MeT told news agency Kashmir Scroll that Srinagar, the summer capital, experienced an exceptionally chilly night with temperatures plummeting to a bone-chilling minus 5.4°C. This stark contrast highlighted a significant drop from the previous night’s reading, which stood at minus 5.3°C.

The official said that Pahalgam, reported a notable temperature drop, registering minus 5.8°C. This represented a decrease from the previous night’s temperature of minus 5.3°C, he said.

Gulmarg, often dubbed a winter wonderland, maintained a consistent low, recording a chilly minus 5.0°C, he said. This mirrored the temperatures from the night before, which stood at minus 5.5° C, he said.

Qazigund, another key location, witnessed a dip in temperatures, reaching minus 3.8°C compared to the previous night’s reading of minus 3.2°C, he said. Kokernag reported a minimum (weather Update) temperature of minus 1.6°C, down from the previous night’s minus 2.1°C, he said.

Even in Jammu, typically associated with a relatively warmer climate, a slight decrease in temperatures was recorded, he said. The thermometer dipped to 6.7°C compared to the previous night’s reading of 7.1°C, he said.

Till 21st December, he said dry and cold weather most likely to continue over most places of J&K with possibility of brief spell of very light snow at isolated extreme higher reaches of North & North Eastern parts of Kmr Division during the night of 16th Dec.

Shallow to moderate fog likely to continue at many places of Kashmir division, he said. (KS)

1. From 12-12-2023, 1700 hrs. to 13-12-2023, 1700 hrs., there was slow movement observed on NH-44 due to breakdown of 05 HMVs and poor surface condition of road at Dalwas and single lane traffic at Cafeteria- Mehad, Magerkote, Nachlana between Nashri and NAVYUG Tunnel.

2. Passengers/LMVs operators are advised to prefer journey on Jammu-Srinagar NHW during day time. Please avoid journey during night hours as apprehension of shooting stones between Ramban and Banihal. 3. HMVs Operators/Owners are requested to desist from overloading and

carry sufficient fuel during journey on Jammu-Srinagar NHW. It is further requested that vehicle owners must double check the fitness of their vehicles and carry sufficient fuel before undertaking journey on Jammu-Srinagar NHW.

4. HMVs with only 06 and 10 tyres shall be allowed to ply through Dhar road.

TRAFFIC PLAN & ADVISORY FOR 14-12-2023:-

Subject to fair weather and good road condition, LMVs Passenger/Private Cars/HMVs/Load Carriers shall be allowed from both sides on Jammu- Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) viz Jammu towards Srinagar and vice- versa. Commuters are advised to follow lane discipline.

SFS Convoy Movement:-

Subject to fair weather and good road condition, Security Forces vehicles shall be allowed from both sides on Jammu-Srinagar NHW (NH-44) viz Jammu towards Srinagar and vice-versa.

SSG ROAD

Subject to fair weather and good road condition, vehicular movement on Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumari road shall be allowed from both sides viz Srinagar towards Kargil and vice-versa. LMVS followed by HMVs shall be allowed from Minamarg towards Srinagar between 0830 hrs. to 1100 hrs. Similarly, LMVs followed by HMVS shall be allowed from Sonamarg towards Kargil between 1230 hrs to 1530 hrs. No vehicle shall be allowed after cut off timings.

SFS Convoy, plying from Srinagar to Kargil, shall leave Srinagar at 0800 hrs. SFS Convoy plying from Drass to Srinagar shall plan their movement in such a manner so that Civil Traffic doesn’t get disturbed.

Mughal Road:-

Subject to fair weather and good road condition, vehicular movement on Mughal road shall be allowed from both sides viz. Poonch towards Shopian and vice versa. These vehicles shall be allowed from Behramgalla (Buffliaz) and Herpora (Shopian) between 0600 hrs. to 1800 hrs. No vehicle shall be allowed after cut of timings
