New Winter Train Time Table Released for Katra–Banihal–Baramulla Rail Section, Effective from October 1, 2025

Indian Railways has officially released the revised winter train schedule for the Katra–Banihal–Baramulla railway section, which will be enforced from October 1, 2025. The updated timetable includes both Down (DN) and Up (UP) train movements along the crucial north-south railway corridor of Jammu and Kashmir, ensuring smoother travel during the upcoming winter months.

The Katra–Banihal–Baramulla rail line serves as a lifeline for thousands of commuters, students, pilgrims and traders. Stretching across the Kashmir Valley and connecting it to the Jammu region, this railway network is not only vital for regular passenger mobility but also plays a key role in boosting tourism, pilgrimage travel to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine, and trade activities between regions. With the onset of winter, Indian Railways has adjusted train timings to accommodate shorter daylight hours, fog-prone regions, and expected snowfall at higher altitudes.

Overview of the Revised Schedule

The revised timetable applies to train services operating between Baramulla, Budgam, Srinagar, Anantnag, Qazigund, Banihal and Katra. It includes express, passenger, and DMU services, clearly categorized between DN (Down Trains) travelling from Katra towards Baramulla and UP (Up Trains) moving from Baramulla towards Katra.

According to the schedule, multiple daily services have been retained to maintain uninterrupted transportation, with adjustments made primarily to departure and arrival timings at intermediate stations. The frequency of trains has been strategically regulated to ensure that even during harsh weather conditions, commuters have viable travel options throughout the day.

Key Highlights of the Winter Time Table

  • Effective Date: 01 October 2025
  • Applies To: All passenger services between Katra and Baramulla via Banihal and Srinagar
  • Format: Separate listings for DN (Katra to Baramulla) and UP (Baramulla to Katra) directions
  • Objective: Regulate movement during winter while ensuring safety and punctuality
  • Beneficiaries: Pilgrims to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, students, government employees, traders, and local commuters

Major Timings – First and Last Trains

While the full timetable contains dozens of entries, the following summary highlights the earliest and latest train services from both ends of the route:

Route First Train Departure Last Train Departure
Katra ➝ Banihal/Baramulla (DN) Early Morning (Approx. 05:00–06:00 hrs) Late Evening (Around 19:30–20:00 hrs)
Baramulla ➝ Katra (UP) Early Morning (Approx. 05:30–06:30 hrs) Late Evening (Around 20:00 hrs)

Exact timings for each station vary as per train category and halts. Passengers are advised to verify their specific service before travel.

Importance of the Route for Jammu & Kashmir

The Katra–Banihal–Baramulla section is one of the most strategic railway corridors in India. It links the Kashmir Valley to the rest of the country, offering a dependable alternative to road travel which is often disrupted due to landslides, snowfall, or highway closures on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44).

  • Pilgrimage Connectivity: Devotees arriving at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Railway Station, Katra, can now conveniently continue their journey towards Srinagar or Baramulla.
  • Student Mobility: Thousands of college and school students rely on these trains daily to commute between towns like Anantnag, Budgam, Sopore, and Srinagar.
  • Economic Linkage: The schedule also benefits small traders and vendors, who use the rail service to transport goods between districts.

Advisory for Passengers

Due to the changing weather conditions during October–February, Indian Railways has urged passengers to follow certain precautions:

  • Arrive at stations 15–20 minutes earlier than usual to accommodate possible delays due to fog or track clearance.
  • Elderly and differently-abled passengers should opt for daytime trains where visibility and platform assistance are better.
  • Winter clothing and warm water are recommended as some halts like Banihal and Qazigund experience significant temperature drops even during the day.
  • Students and government employees using monthly season tickets (MSTs) must renew passes in advance to avoid queues during the peak season.

Railway Authorities to Monitor Operations Closely

Railway officials have assured that track maintenance, snow clearance operations, and signal visibility systems have been reinforced in anticipation of weather disruptions. Additional patrolling teams will be deployed in high-altitude zones to ensure passenger safety during heavy snowfall.

Should conditions worsen, Indian Railways may temporarily reschedule or merge services, with advance intimation to the public via station announcements and social media channels.

The release of the New Winter Train Time Table for the Katra–Banihal–Baramulla rail corridor marks an important step towards ensuring reliable connectivity across Jammu and Kashmir during the cold season. By adjusting train schedules to align with winter-specific challenges, Indian Railways has demonstrated proactive planning and commitment to public convenience.

Passengers are advised to refer to the official timetable image, plan their travel accordingly, and stay updated through railway helplines and station noticeboards.

University of Kashmir Extends Deadline for PG Programmes (Distance Mode) Admissions 2025

University of Kashmir Extends Deadline for PG Programmes (Distance Mode) Admissions 2025

The University of Kashmir has officially extended the last date for submission of online applications for Postgraduate (PG) Programmes offered in Distance Mode through its Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE). As per the latest notification issued by the Directorate of Admissions and Competitive Examinations, candidates now have time until September 30, 2025, 10:00 AM to complete the application process.

The extension comes in response to multiple requests received from aspiring candidates who, for various reasons, were unable to complete their applications by the earlier deadline. The decision ensures that more students can avail themselves of the opportunity to enroll in the University’s distance learning postgraduate programmes.

Background of the Admission Notification

The University of Kashmir had earlier released Admission Notification No. 17 (E) of 2025 dated 15-09-2025, inviting online applications from eligible candidates for admission to its PG Programmes (Distance Mode) under the Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE).

The notification covered a wide range of postgraduate courses, making higher education more accessible for candidates who, due to professional, financial, or personal constraints, cannot pursue full-time programmes on the university campus.

However, as is often the case with competitive and large-scale admission processes, a significant number of students were unable to submit their forms on time. Some faced technical issues, others were awaiting required documents, and many requested additional time to prepare their applications. Considering these factors, the university authorities decided to extend the deadline by 15 additional days, ensuring inclusivity and wider participation.

Key Highlights of the Extension

  • Extended Deadline: September 30, 2025, up to 10:00 AM.
  • Applicable Courses: All PG Programmes offered under Distance Mode through CDOE.
  • Earlier Deadline: September 15, 2025 (as per Notification No. 17 E of 2025).
  • Issued By: Directorate of Admissions and Competitive Examinations, University of Kashmir.
  • Purpose of Extension: To accommodate aspirants who missed the initial deadline due to unavoidable reasons.

This extension is especially significant for working professionals, candidates from remote areas, and those balancing academics with personal responsibilities, as distance learning has emerged as a preferred mode of higher education.

Importance of Distance Learning in Kashmir

The Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE), University of Kashmir, has been playing a pivotal role in providing affordable, flexible, and quality higher education to thousands of students across the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir and beyond.

Distance education has gained immense importance in recent years due to several factors:

  1. Accessibility: Many students, particularly from rural and remote areas of Jammu and Kashmir, cannot relocate to Srinagar or other cities for regular on-campus education. Distance learning bridges this gap.
  2. Flexibility: PG Programmes in distance mode are designed for individuals who are employed, self-employed, or managing household responsibilities, allowing them to continue learning without disrupting their schedules.
  3. Affordability: Compared to regular postgraduate courses, distance education programmes are relatively more affordable, making higher education possible for economically weaker sections of society.
  4. Digital Integration: With the rapid adoption of online platforms, distance education is no longer limited to printed study material. The University of Kashmir has integrated digital lectures, online study resources, and e-learning platforms to enhance the quality of its programmes.
  5. Career Advancement: Many working professionals enroll in distance postgraduate courses to upgrade their qualifications and enhance their career prospects without having to quit their jobs.

Courses Offered Under PG Programmes (Distance Mode)

While the official notification does not list all the courses, traditionally, the University of Kashmir offers a wide variety of postgraduate programmes through its distance education wing. These typically include disciplines such as:

  • Arts & Humanities (e.g., English, Urdu, Education, Islamic Studies, Hindi, Kashmiri)
  • Social Sciences (e.g., Sociology, Political Science, Economics, History)
  • Commerce & Management (e.g., M.Com, MBA Distance Mode)
  • Sciences (select subjects offered in blended or online mode)
  • Teacher Education & Professional Courses

These courses are designed to maintain academic rigor while ensuring flexibility in terms of learning pace and evaluation.

Why This Extension Matters for Students

Many aspirants were concerned that they would lose out on the opportunity to pursue higher education this year due to missing the original deadline. The University’s decision to extend the last date offers several benefits:

  • Second Chance: Students who faced unavoidable delays now have another chance to apply.
  • Wider Participation: It allows students from far-flung regions to arrange necessary documents and complete applications.
  • Reduced Stress: Candidates who were under pressure to meet the initial deadline now have additional time to carefully complete the process.
  • Fair Opportunity: The extension reflects the University’s student-friendly approach, ensuring fairness and inclusivity.

Application Process (General Guidelines)

While the detailed step-by-step process was outlined in the original admission notification, here is a general overview of how candidates can apply:

  1. Visit Official Website: Applicants must log in to the official University of Kashmir admission portal www.kashmiruniversity.net.
  2. Register/Login: New users must create an account, while existing users can log in with their credentials.
  3. Fill Application Form: Provide academic, personal, and contact details carefully.
  4. Upload Documents: Upload scanned copies of required certificates, including marksheets, domicile certificate, and photographs.
  5. Pay Application Fee: Fees can be paid online via debit/credit card, net banking, or other available modes.
  6. Submit Form: Review all details before submitting. A confirmation printout should be kept for future reference.

Expert Insights and Reactions

Educational experts and aspirants have welcomed the University’s decision to extend the deadline. Many have pointed out that such extensions are crucial in regions like Jammu & Kashmir where internet connectivity issues, accessibility challenges, and socio-political factors often impact timely completion of formalities.

A student from Baramulla shared:
“I was unable to apply on time as my degree certificate was still pending verification. This extension has saved my academic year, and I am grateful to the University authorities.”

Similarly, teachers and academicians believe that the move aligns with the university’s vision of inclusive education. It not only boosts enrollment but also enhances the credibility of the university’s distance education programmes.

University of Kashmir: A Brief Profile

The University of Kashmir, located in Hazratbal, Srinagar, is one of the premier institutions of higher learning in India. Accredited with NAAC Grade A+, it offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and diploma programmes.

The Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE) has been a major pillar of the university, catering to thousands of learners annually. Its vision is to democratize education by breaking geographical and socio-economic barriers.

Over the decades, the university has consistently upgraded its distance education facilities, integrating online platforms, digital classrooms, and interactive study modules to ensure students receive quality education at par with regular programmes.

Final Word

The extension of the deadline for PG Programmes (Distance Mode) admissions for the 2025 session by the University of Kashmir is a much-needed relief for aspirants. It reflects the institution’s student-centric approach, ensuring that genuine candidates do not miss out on higher education opportunities due to minor delays or unavoidable circumstances.

With the last date now set to September 30, 2025 (10:00 AM), candidates are strongly advised to complete their applications without further delay. This is a golden opportunity to pursue postgraduate education from one of the most prestigious universities in the region, with the flexibility of distance learning.
