Jammu-Srinagar Direct Train Likely to Start by October-End Under USBRL Project

‘Jammu–Srinagar direct train likely to roll out before winter’

Srinagar: The much-awaited Jammu–Srinagar direct train service is likely to become operational by the end of October, sources said.

They told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the service, part of the prestigious 272-km Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, is being seen as a major step in connecting the Valley with the rest of the country through uninterrupted rail travel.

According to officials, the service is expected to begin once the pending works at Jammu railway station are wrapped up. The expansion of Jammu railway station was scheduled to be completed by September. However, the pace of work slowed due to multiple factors, pushing the deadline back by nearly three weeks.

A senior railway official said that the final work is yet to be completed at the Jammu railway division, and the project is in its last stages. “Construction activities are continuing, and efforts are being made to finish the remaining tasks. Once the pending expansion at Jammu station is completed and clearance is received, the direct service will be launched. The target is to make it operational before winter sets in,” the official said.

The USBRL project, declared a ‘national project’ in 2002, has faced numerous engineering and natural challenges. It features some of the world’s most ambitious railway infrastructure, including the Chenab Rail Bridge—the tallest railway bridge in the world—and several long tunnels.

The new connectivity is expected to give a major boost to tourism, trade, and the horticulture sector in Jammu and Kashmir—(KNO)

Government Medical College Srinagar Issues Notification for Written Test of Infection Control Nurse under National Programme on AMR Containment

The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has released an important notification regarding the recruitment process for the position of Infection Control Nurse at Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar. This recruitment is being conducted on a contract basis under the National Programme on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Containment in the Department of Microbiology, GMC Srinagar. The written test for the shortlisted candidates has been officially scheduled, and details about eligibility, candidate list, examination schedule, and instructions have been made public through the notification dated 16th September 2025.

This development marks a crucial step in strengthening infection control practices in hospitals and healthcare institutions across Jammu and Kashmir, ensuring alignment with the national mission to combat antimicrobial resistance, which has emerged as a global health threat.

Background of the Notification

Earlier, the Government Medical College Srinagar had issued Notice No. 01 of 2025 dated 01.07.2025, inviting applications for the contractual post of Infection Control Nurse. The minimum eligibility criteria specified in the advertisement included:

  • Photo ID card issued by the Competent Authority, OR

Failure to produce both the admit card and valid ID proof will disqualify a candidate from appearing in the test.

Importance of the Role of Infection Control Nurse

The role of an Infection Control Nurse is of immense significance, particularly in the current healthcare context. These professionals are responsible for:

  1. Monitoring Infection Control Practices: Ensuring compliance with infection prevention protocols within hospitals.
  2. Training and Education: Conducting awareness sessions for staff and patients regarding hygiene and infection prevention.
  3. Surveillance of Hospital-Acquired Infections (HAIs): Collecting and analyzing data on infections to recommend control measures.
  4. Implementation of AMR Strategies: Supporting the national mission to combat antimicrobial resistance by promoting rational use of antibiotics.
  5. Quality Assurance in NABH-accredited Hospitals: Helping hospitals maintain high-quality patient care standards as per accreditation norms.

Through the recruitment of Infection Control Nurses under the National AMR Containment Programme, GMC Srinagar is contributing towards enhancing patient safety, reducing healthcare-associated infections, and ensuring effective infection control practices across the region.

Why Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Containment is Crucial

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) has become one of the gravest public health challenges worldwide. Overuse and misuse of antibiotics in human medicine, veterinary practices, and agriculture have accelerated the emergence of drug-resistant pathogens.

Key concerns include:

  • Rising number of multidrug-resistant infections.
  • Limited availability of effective antibiotics.
  • Increase in hospital-acquired infections due to resistant organisms.
  • Higher morbidity and mortality rates among affected patients.

The Government of India, under its National Programme on AMR Containment, has been strengthening institutional frameworks by recruiting specialized professionals such as Infection Control Nurses, Microbiologists, and Infection Preventionists. GMC Srinagar’s initiative is a part of this nationwide effort to safeguard healthcare delivery systems from the threat of AMR.

Advice for Eligible Candidates

As the examination date approaches, the shortlisted candidates are advised to:

  • Download Admit Cards on Time: Ensure admit cards are downloaded by or before 22nd September 2025.
  • Prepare Thoroughly for MCQ Test: Brush up knowledge on infection control, microbiology, and NABH standards.
  • Carry Identity Proof: Keep original documents ready for verification at the venue.
  • Report Early to the Venue: Arrive at least an hour before the exam to avoid last-minute hassles.
  • Follow Instructions Carefully: Adhere to all examination rules and instructions provided by the invigilators.

Final Word

The written test for the recruitment of Infection Control Nurse at Government Medical College Srinagar is not just a recruitment process but a vital step in the region’s fight against antimicrobial resistance. With only five candidates qualifying for the written test, the competition is intense, and selection will depend solely on merit demonstrated in the upcoming exam.

The GMC Srinagar has maintained transparency by publishing the detailed eligibility list, reasons for ineligibility, and exam schedule well in advance. This initiative reflects the institution’s commitment to fairness, accountability, and the broader mission of improving healthcare standards in Jammu and Kashmir.

Eligible candidates should now focus on their preparation for the exam on 25th September 2025, while the ineligible candidates may take this as an opportunity to upgrade their experience and qualifications for future recruitments.

Through this recruitment, GMC Srinagar continues to strengthen its position as a leading healthcare institution in the region, dedicated to patient care, medical education, and public health improvement.
