CBSE Class 10 Board Exams to Be Held Twice a Year Starting 2026; First Attempt Mandatory

The Central Board of Secondary Education has approved the norms for conducting board exams twice a year for Class-10.

Students of Class 10 will get an opportunity to sit for board exams twice from academic year 2026-27 onwards, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) stated on Wednesday (June 25, 2025).

CBSE’s decision is in line with the National Education Policy 2020 recommendation that to further eliminate the ‘high stakes,’ aspect of Board Exams, all students be allowed to take Board Exams on up to two occasions during any given school year, one main exam and one for improvement, if desired.

Rahul Singh, CBSE Chairman said, “While it is mandatory for students to appear in the first board examination which will be conducted in mid-February, all students who pass the first board examination and are eligible will be allowed to improve their performance in any of the three subjects out of Science, Mathematics, Social Science and two language papers. The second exam is purely optional and additional in nature.”

Second exam optional

Officials stated that results of the mandatory first examination will be declared in the month of April. “The second exam [which will be the improvement exam] will be conducted in the month of May and its results will be declared in June. Students can choose to sit for the improvement exam after reviewing their scores in the first exam,” Dr. Sanyam Bhardwaj, Controller of Examinations, CBSE explained.

CBSE officials stated that since 2019 the national board has been offering an opportunity for students to write an improvement exam for any two subjects (including vocational subjects like singing and so on). However, in the new scheme proposed by CBSE, students can sit for an improvement exam only in three of the aforementioned academic subjects. “When we analysed the results database, we realised that students were already scoring decent marks in vocational subjects, and a need was felt for offering improvement exams in academic subjects. Offering an improvement exam in up to three subjects will offer students a 60 per cent opportunity to enhance their scores,” Dr Bhardwaj added.

Officials also said that if a student has not appeared in three or more subjects in the first mandatory board exam, then s/he will not be allowed to appear in the second (improvement examination).

“This is to ensure that students do not go opportunity shopping and take the first mandatory board exam seriously,” Mr. Singh emphasised.

Dr Bhardwaj told The Hindu that those students who do not appear or fail in three or more subjects will be placed in the ‘Essential Repeat,’ category and can take the main exam only in the next academic year. “Whereas, for students who do not appear or fail in one or two subjects will be placed in the Compartment category and will be allowed to appear in the second [improvement)] examination,” he said.

Officials also said that CBSE students get three attempts to clear ‘Compartment,’ status. “For the academic year of 2025-26, compartment exams will happen as usual in July and results will be declared in August. However, from 2026-27 onwards, the first compartment attempt exam will be merged with the newly proposed the second exam (improvement exam) and will occur earlier in June. There will be no more exams in July,” Mr. Singh explained.

For Compartment students the second attempt will coincide with the ensuing year’s main board exam, and their third attempt will yet again coincide with that year’s improvement exam schedule.

Mr. Bhardwaj also said that students who have passed by replacement of the subject, but want to improve their performance in the subject in which they did not pass will be given an opportunity to sit in the second improvement exam. “For instance, if a student did not pass in Maths, and passed by appearing for a replacement subject, s/he will get an opportunity to pass in Maths too, if it is mandatory for the student to show passing marks in Maths for pursuing higher studies,” he explained.

DSEK orders continuation of remedial coaching during summer break

Srinagar, June 25: School Education Department Wednesday ordered the education institutions to continue remedial teaching during Summer vacations for schools with poor results in JKBOSE Class 10th & 12th Examinations.

According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Joint Director elementary education at Directorate of School Education Kashmir in a communique said, “Remedial teaching was initiated for schools that recorded unsatisfactory performance in the recently declared JKBOSE Class 10th and 12th examinations.”

It also said that DSEK has reviewed that sustained academic support is crucial to bridge learning gaps and ensure that students are well-prepared for the forthcoming biannual examinations.

DSEK said that in view of the matter, and keeping in mind the best interests of students, it is ordered that throughout the summer vacations, it shall continue without any interruption as envisaged in already issued order for the schools identified with poor results.

“Classes shall be organized during early morning hours from 8:00 am to facilitate a conducive learning environment and to safeguard students from extreme heat during the day,” the directorate ordered.

DSEK said that the objective of remedial teaching is to strengthen the fundamental concepts of students, provide them individual attention, clarify their doubts, and equip them with exam-oriented preparation so that they can improve their performance in the upcoming biannual exams.

“The subject-wise remedial plan with timelines prepared by the concerned teachers should be strictly adhered to and followed in letter and spirit,” it said.

DSEK further said that the Heads of Institutions shall ensure that remedial teaching focuses intensively on subjects and topics identified and monitor it on daily basis with written records.

“Detailed remedial schedules shall be displayed on the school notice boards for information of students, parents and monitoring institutions and teachers engaged for remedial classes shall adopt interactive and student-friendly teaching methods, assess the progress of students regularly, and maintain comprehensive records of attendance, lesson dairies with topics covered, and student assessment and improvement,” it reads.

DSEK further said that the parents shall be sensitized and motivated to ensure that their wards atterid the remedial classes regularly and make full use of this additional academic support.

“Cluster Heads shall personally monitor the conduct and quality of remedial classes by visiting schools periodically. Daily monitoring reports, along with photographs and performance reviews, shall be submitted to Cluster Heads and respective DIETs without fail,” DSEK said.

The directorate further ordered that the DIETs shall closely monitor the process and submit reports to SCERT on weekly basis.
”Non-compliance of the instructions or any laxity in the conduct of remedial teaching shall be viewed seriously and strict disciplinary action shall be initiated against the erring officials and teachers.”

DSEK accordingly directed Chief Education Officers to implement the order in letter and spirit so that the students are fully supported academically and are better equipped to succeed in the upcoming supplementary JKBOSE examinations—(KNO)

Selection Criteria for Phase 3

(A) Sectional Cut-offs:

Minimum qualifying marks must be obtained in each objective and descriptive section. Cut-offs are determined based on the number of vacancies.

(B) Aggregate Score:

A merit list will be prepared category-wise based on the aggregate scores. Candidates up to three times the number of vacancies in each category will be shortlisted for Phase 3.

Phase 3: Final Stage

This stage includes:

  • Psychometric Test – 20 marks
  • Group Exercise – 30 marks
  • Personal Interview – 50 marks

The Psychometric Test is conducted for personality profiling. Its findings may be considered during the interview process.

Final Selection

Candidates must qualify in both Phase 2 and Phase 3. The final merit list will be prepared by normalising marks obtained in:

  • Phase 2: 75% weightage
  • Phase 3: 25% weightage

NCDC Core Committee Stresses Revival of Reading Habits Among Children

New Delhi: June 24: In its latest core committee meeting, the National Child Development Council (NCDC) passed a key resolution centered on reviving reading habits among children, emphasizing its role in holistic development and as a tool for diversion from digital distractions and negative influences.

The meeting, led by the senior members of NCDC, witnessed an interesting debate regarding the decreasing culture of reading among students owing to the increase in screen time and mobile use. The committee did recommend inclusion of reading-based activities in the curriculum and teacher training courses to restore the culture of reading at schools and homes.

Important Points Discussed:

Inspiration with Creativity: Members shared ideas on inspiring children to write poetry, publish short books, and take part in literary activities from a young age. An example was mentioned of a student’s poem being adopted as the school opening ceremony song, highlighting the power of young minds.

Reading Against Drug Abuse: Reading was also set as a key component in anti-drug campaigns, serving to deflect students away from destructive influences by exposing them to worthwhile and imaginative endeavors.

Teachers as Role Models: Many members stressed the role that teachers play in building reading culture. “Only a teacher who reads passionately can pass on the same to their students,” opined Shakila Wahab, calling for reading habits to be incorporated in teacher training programmes.

Books Beyond Textbooks: Core members concurred that reading should go beyond textbooks. They recommended the incorporation of novels, comics, and age-literate literature to promote language skills, creativity, and critical thinking.

Curriculum Integration as a Solution: Mohammad Rizwan emphasized incorporating reading programs in the formal syllabus, contending that without structural integration, it would be challenging to direct today’s digital-native generation toward books.

Family and Environmental Influence: Ananthi suggested that reading habits need to be imitated in front of kids at home and in school. “Reading aloud and enjoying the process can encourage children to emulate and participate,” she said.

Forecast Overview

  • 24th June:
    The weather is expected to remain generally hot and humid across most parts of the Union Territory. However, brief spells of rain or thundershowers may occur at scattered locations.
  • 25th to 27th June:
    Generally cloudy skies with intermittent light to moderate rain/thundershowers are expected in many areas.

Srinagar, June 23 (KNO): Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha expressed gratitude to PM Modi and Union Transport minister Nitin Gadkari for approving 19 mega road and tunnel projects for the Union Territory.

In a post on X, the LG, per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said he is extremely grateful to PM Modi Ji and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for giving approval to 19 mega road and tunnel projects for J&K worth Rs 10,637 Crore.

“Major approved projects include construction of Peer-Ki-Gali tunnel, Sadhana tunnel, Zaznar Shopian section of NH-701A, 4-L flyover from Lal Chowk to Parimpora, Trehgam Chamkote section of NH-701, 4-Lane Magam Flyover on Narbal-Gulmarg section & Qazigund Bypass & other projects,” he LG said.

He added many strategically important projects will improve logistical support and troops mobility. “Projects will improve infrastructure in J&K and connect various tourist destinations. Construction of tunnels will reduce the travel time, ensure all-weather connectivity and spur economic growth,” he said—(KNO)

10 Days Summer Vacations for J&K Degree Colleges from 24 June

Srinagar, June 23 (JKNS): The Higher Education Department has announced new summer vacation dates for Government Degree Colleges across Kashmir, now from June 24–July 3, 2025, instead of the earlier announced July 15–24.

In an official order issued by Higher education department a copy of which lies with news agency JKNS, In partial modification of the Government Order No.261-JK (HE) of 2025 dated 30-05-2025, it is hereby ordered that the Summer vacation in all the Government Degree Colleges of Kashmir Division shall be observed w.e.f. “24-06-2025 to 03-07-2025” instead of “15-07-2025 to 24-07-2025”, it reads.
