The hike follows a reduction in rates by 1.5 per cent in the previous revision on January 1.

Prior to that, prices were increased twice – Rs 2,941.5 per kl (3.3 per cent) on November 1, and by Rs 1,318.12 per kl (1.45 per cent) on December 1, 2024.

Oil firms also reduced the price of commercial LPG by Rs 7 to Rs 1,797 per 19-kg cylinder in the national capital.

This the second reduction in the rate after five straight monthly hikes in commercial LPG price. The price was cut by Rs 14.5 per 19-kg cylinder at the last revision on January 1, 2024.

In five price hikes prior to the two rounds of cuts this year, commercial LPG rate had been hiked by Rs 172.5 per 19-kg cylinder.

Commercial LPG now costs Rs 1,749.50 per 19-kg cylinder in Mumbai, Rs 1,907 in Kolkata and Rs 1,959.50 in Chennai.

Prices of ATF and LPG differ from state to state depending on the incidence of local taxes including VAT.

The rate of cooking gas used in domestic households, however, remained unchanged at Rs 803 per 14.2-kg cylinder.

State-owned Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) revise prices of ATF and cooking gas on the first of every month based on the average price of benchmark international fuel and foreign exchange rate.

Prices of petrol and diesel continue to remain frozen. Rates had been cut by Rs 2 per litre in mid-March ahead of the general elections. Petrol costs Rs 94.72 a litre in Delhi, while diesel is priced at Rs 87.62.–(PTI)

Train to Leh: After Kashmir, Govt shifts focus towards Ladakh rail link

Patna based company initiates railway track alignment, conducts surveys

Srinagar, Jan 31 (KNO): After the completion of the Kashmir rail link, the government has shifted its focus about providing train connectivity to Ladakh.

According to the details available with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), an exercise to construct a railway track from Beri of Bilaspur to Manali-Leh has already commenced.

“Patna based Skylark company has initiated railway track alignment and is conducting surveys. Using satellite-based mapping, the proposed track has been marked with cement towers in Baihna of Balh Valley,” said a source.

“The company officials conducting surveys has generated enthusiasm among locals, who are eager to learn more about the ambitious railway project,” he added.

As per the officials, Bilaspur-Manali-Leh rail line will be constructed in three phases, covering a total distance of 465 km. “Alignment work began on January 20, with tower installations progressing from Bilaspur to Leh via Manali. Towers are being placed at designated locations based on previous satellite surveys,” they added.

“To ensure uninterrupted operations, even in extreme weather, the railway track will be equipped with snow cutters, similar to those successfully used on the Jammu-Kashmir rail line,” said an official.

“The project is not new, as efforts to install railway track towers in Baihna of Balh Valley were initiated five years ago but were subsequently halted. With renewed focus and momentum, authorities are now determined to complete the long-pending infrastructure project,” the official added.

Pertinently, the railway line holds immense strategic importance, as it will facilitate troop movement and supplies to the China border throughout the year.

In December 2024, Member of Parliament from Mandi, Kangana Ranaut while supporting the Railways Amendment Bill 2024 in Parliament raised the issue of railway expansion in Himachal Pradesh.

She emphasized the need for a railway survey in Mandi and highlighted the benefits of connecting the region to major cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, and Ambala.

According to her, enhanced rail connectivity will significantly boost the development and economic progress of Himachal Pradesh—(KNO)

Gold prices continued their upward trend for the second consecutive session, reaching a new all-time high of 83,800 per 10 grams in the national capital on Thursday, driven by strong global cues.

As per the All India Sarafa Association, gold with 99.9% purity inched up by 50 to hit a fresh peak of 83,800 per 10 grams, surpassing its previous close of 83,750 per 10 grams on Wednesday.

Gold and Silver Prices Fall: Know the Latest Rates Here

Meanwhile, silver surged by 1,150 to 94,150 per kg, up from its previous closing price of 93,000 per kg.

In futures trading, gold contracts for February delivery surged by 575 (0.72%) to reach an all-time high of 80,855 per 10 grams. Similarly, April contracts rose by 541 (0.67%), setting a new record of 81,415 per 10 grams on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX).

“Gold traded positively in MCX as participants positioned themselves against potential import duty hikes, following the 6 per cent cut in the previous Budget. A significant divergence was observed between Comex and MCX, with domestic gold rallying 2.5 per cent in the past week, while Comex gained only 0.50 per cent,” Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst of Commodity and Currency, LKP Securities, said.

Silver futures for March delivery climbed by 1,050 or 1.14% to reach 92,916 per kg, up from the previous close of 91,866 per kg on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, in global markets, Comex gold futures surged by $23.65 per ounce or 0.84%, reaching a record high of $2,817.15 per ounce.

“Uncertainty around US President Donald Trump’s policy causes a new leg down in US Treasury yields, which helps gold prices continue their northward journey,” Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst of Commodities at HDFC Securities, said.

Further, investors are still anxious about the economic consequences of Trump’s trade tariffs and protectionist policies, which continue to support the safe-haven precious metal, Gandhi added.

What’s driving the rally?

Investors are dumping riskier assets as they prefer safe haven amid global economic uncertainties. Against this backdrop, gold outshining other riskier asset classes like equities, traders said.

Comex silver futures in the Asian market hours also traded 2.06 per cent higher at USD 32.04 per ounce.

On Wednesday, the US Federal Reserve (Fed) kept the interest rates unchanged at 4.25-4.5 per cent as it is not in a hurry to cut rates. The Fed called the risks to its dual mandate of employment and inflation as finely balanced.

According to commodities experts, the US Treasury yields had a muted response to Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s commentary, suggesting that interest rates could remain higher for longer due to ongoing inflationary threats and a robust labour market, which helped gold prices.

“Traders now focus on key economic indicators, including GDP figures, jobs data, and pending home sales, for further insights into the US economy, especially given Powell’s emphasis that future rate decisions will remain data-dependent,” Kaynat Chainwala, AVP-Commodity Research at Kotak Securities, said.
