Srinagar-New Delhi rail service to begin on January 26

Srinagar, Dec 16 (KNS): The Kashmir Valley will soon be connected to the rest of India by rail for the first time in its history. The long-awaited Srinagar-New Delhi rail link, which has been under construction for over two decades, is set to become a reality. The much-anticipated Vande Bharat train service between New Delhi and Srinagar will be inaugurated on January 26, 2025.

This announcement has brought joy to the people of Kashmir, who have waited for years to have direct rail access to the rest of the country. The completion of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link, as mentioned by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, has been celebrated by various communities, including businessmen, students, tourists, and workers.

The tourism industry, in particular, is excited about the new rail link. Kashmir is a popular tourist destination, and the rail service will make it more affordable and convenient for visitors.

“This is a welcome step and a historic development. The train service will boost tourism and many other sectors in Kashmir,” said Manzoor Pakhtoon, President of the Houseboat Association.

The business community has also expressed great enthusiasm, calling the rail link a game changer. Many believe it will open new opportunities for growth in both business and tourism.

With this new connection, Kashmir is expecting a tourism boom, as the train service will operate year-round, making it easier for people to visit during all seasons—summer, winter, spring, and autumn.

The Srinagar-New Delhi rail link promises to be a life-changing experience for travellers and will help the region grow economically. (KNS)

National Child Development Council Core Committee Discusses Health Impact of Junk Food on Children and Youth

National Child Development Council Core Committee Discusses Health Impact of Junk Food on Children and Youth

In the recent core committee meeting of the National Child Development Council (NCDC), members discussed a pressing issue concerning the health and behavior of children and youth in relation to their food choices. The discussion centered on the growing trend of young people opting for fast food over homemade meals, and the adverse effects it is having on their physical and mental well-being.

The meeting began with an insightful observation about the increasing preference for fast food items such as burgers, pizzas, and other fast foods, which are being delivered from outside rather than home-cooked meals. Members expressed concern about the potential long-term health risks associated with such habits, including obesity and other behavioral issues. It was pointed out that, while these foods are often seen as a symbol of modernity and social status, they contribute to unhealthy lifestyles.

A member of the committee, emphasized the importance of promoting healthy eating habits from a young age. She shared examples of schools that are encouraging healthier food choices, suggesting that schools could play a key role in addressing this issue by offering nutritious alternatives and rewarding students who bring healthy meals. She also highlighted an innovative initiative by some schools in the Gulf, where parents and local organizations are managing school canteens, providing students with healthy, traditional food options.

Another member stressed the importance of starting healthy food habits in school. She noted that many schools, including both private and government institutions, are now providing balanced meals that meet the nutritional needs of students. These efforts are helping children become more health-conscious and aware of the importance of dietary value. She suggested that the healthy food habits nurtured in schools would eventually carry over into students’ homes and daily lives, creating a lasting positive impact on their health.

NCDC Master Trainer Baba Alexander highlighted the dangers posed by the consumption of junk foods, particularly those that are heavily marketed to younger generations. He pointed out that while the taste and convenience of these foods are appealing, the long-term effects, such as liver cirrhosis and kidney issues, are becoming increasingly common among young people.

Baba Alexander called for more awareness and education about the dangers of processed and non-organic foods, urging the government to take greater responsibility in ensuring food safety and quality. He also expressed concern about the rise of fast food chains and their influence on children, noting that the marketing strategies used by these companies are designed to create dependency on unhealthy food choices.

The meeting concluded with a call for collective action from schools, parents, and the government to address the growing trend of junk food consumption and to promote healthier, more nutritious diets for children and youth. The committee members agreed that education, awareness campaigns, and healthier food options in schools are crucial steps in combating this health crisis.

Transport Commissioner sets Jan 31 as deadline for installation of CCTV cameras in school buses

Jammu, Dec 16: Transport Commissioner, Vishesh Mahajan today held a meeting with representatives of school authorities regarding the safety audit of vehicles ferrying students. The aim of the move was to seek active participation and cooperation from the school authorities to ensure that vehicles used for ferrying students are fit and safe for transportation.

Referring to the Supreme Court’s directions for school buses, the Transport Commissioner set 31st January as the deadline for the mandatory installation of CCTV in school buses so that every activity of the driver and assisting staff while driving is monitored. This will ensure the safety of students round the clock.

The school authorities were directed to ensure that all vehicles are fitted with functional speed governors, with the speed fixed at 40 km/h as per guidelines issued from time to time. They were informed that the vehicles will be seized on the spot if any school bus will be found violating safety norms while plying on roads, especially with regard to overloading and over speeding.

The authorities assured that all safety measures outlined in the Supreme Court guidelines are being followed to ensure the safety of children. They were further asked to restrict underage students from driving two-wheelers/ four-wheelers in and around school premises. Additionally, they were directed to hold counseling sessions with the parents to warn about the consequences if their wards are not prohibited from underage driving.

The Transport Commissioner was informed that most schools have their own fleet of vehicles, but some private vehicles are also engaged by parents.

Therefore, it is the duty of school authorities to ensure that these vehicles also comply with the mandatory guidelines, such as emergency exit doors, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, GPS trackers, CCTV cameras, the use of seat belts, fire detection alarm system etc.

Among others, the meeting was attended by Joint Transport Commissioner Vinay Samotra, Assistant Transport Commissioner, ARTO (HQ) Jammu, and school authorities.
