In J&K, GI index of Hr Edu institutes above national average for 18-23 year old students

Riyaz Bhat

Srinagar, Oct 24 (KNO): In Jammu and Kashmir, Gender Parity Index (GPI) is above the national average in higher educational institutes for 18-23 year-old students.

As per the official figures accessed by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the national average of GPI in higher educational institutes for 18-23 years old students is 1.05 in all categories.

However, Jammu and Kashmir has a GPI of 1.18 in all categories.

In the education space, GPI is used to measure gender equality in education access.

Government and international organisations such as UNESCO and the United Nations monitor the gender gap in education access, using GPI to identify sectors where intervention is needed to address gender disparities.

Among the scheduled caste students, GPI in Jammu and Kashmir is also above the national average with 1.27 whereas the national average lies at 1.7.

Likewise, the GPI of Schedule Tribe students of higher education in Jammu and Kashmir is 0.92 while the national average is 1.02.

A GPI of less than 1 suggests girls are more disadvantaged than boys in learning opportunities and a GPI of greater than 1 suggests the other way around—(KNO)

G20 summit, GI tagging fallout: Handicrafts worth Rs208. 21 cr exported in first quarter

Mubashir Aalam Wani

Srinagar, Oct 24 (KNO): Geographic Indication (GI) tagging followed by the recently held G20 summit seems to have done its job to promote Kashmir handicrafts.

As per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), in the first quarter of this year, handicrafts worth Rs 208.21 crore have been exported from Jammu and Kashmir to the rest of the world.

The said amount constitutes 55 per cent of the exports recorded during April- September last year.

Official figures reveal that handcrafts worth Rs 375.97 crore have been exported from Kashmir during April- September 2022, which almost make two quarters.

Noteworthy, last year, handicrafts exports from Jammu and Kashmir touched Rs. 1116.37 crore mark.

During the first quarter this year, the largest growth has been seen in carpet exports. In Quarter 1, carpets valued at Rs 88.92 crore were exported.

Rumals and Shawls totaling Rs 79.95 crore were exported during the first quarter.

In Quarter 1, chain stitch exports totaled Rs 32.85 crore. During that time, Papier Machie products were exported for Rs 2.23 crore.

Exports of woodcarving and other items totalling Rs 2.54 crore were recorded during the first quarter.

Kashmir, recently obtained GI tagging for its renowned handicrafts, including Pashmina shawls, carpets, and exquisite Papier-mâché items.

The GI tagging ensures the authenticity and origin of these products, offering protection from duplication and counterfeiting while also enhancing their marketability in international trade.

Earlier this year in May, G20 summit was held in Kashmir during which many handicraft products were displayed to woo the visiting delegates.

While the delegates acknowledged the art behind handicrafts, a lot of them toured Srinagar areas and purchased handicraft items.

An official said that the G20 meet and GI tagging has boosted the sales of Kashmiri handicrafts.

“There has been a good demand for Kashmiri handicrafts this year. The G20 summit promoted our craft as demand for Kashmiri handicrafts is more from European countries,” he said.

Pertinently, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha Friday said Jammu and Kashmir administration will work to provide infrastructure support to the artisans—(KNO)

Irfan Pathan Danced With Rashid Khan After Afghanistan’s Epic Win Over Pakistan

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan was seen dancing joyfully along with Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan at the Chepauk ground after Afghanistan recorded a historic, first-ever ODI match win against Pakistan in their World Cup 2023 encounter on Monday in Chennai.

After losing to Pakistan in 7 ODI matches previously, two of them in very tight games, Afghanistan finally kept their nerves to complete a tall chase in Chennai to cause their second upset of the tournament, having defeated England in Delhi 8 days ago.

Both Afghanistan and Pakistan now have 4 points each (2 wins) in 5 games. This win for Afghanistan meant that they jumped in the middle of the points table and England went down to the bottom position, with just one win in 4 games.

After the victory, the Afghanistan players and support staff did a lap of honor at the Chepauk and the Chennai crowd gave them a standing ovation.

Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan, who has often shown his support for the Afghanistan cricket team, danced with Rashid Khan on the ground. Irfan Pathan was on the ground, near the boundary line, for his broadcasting duties when Rashid and his teammates were doing a lap of honor. When Irfan Pathan saw Rashid Khan, both got involved in a brief dance which they both clearly enjoyed very much.

Watch: Irfan Pathan danced with Rashid Khan after Afghanistan’s historic win over Pakistan

Talking about the game, it was a complete, team performance from Afghanistan.

Wrist-spinner Noor Ahmad was brought in the side specifically for this game, and he delivered on his World Cup debut, picking up a three-wicket haul – taking wickets of Babar Azam, Shafique, and Rizwan. Babar top-scored with 74, Shafique scored 58, and Shadab and Iftikhar scored 40 runs each to take Pakistan to a total of 282.

Many thought that this total would be enough for Pakistan to defend. However, Afghanistan had other plans. And very solid plans. Their batters remained steady throughout their chase and never panicked, as they had done on previous occasions.

Their top three all scored half-centuries: Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored 65 runs, Ibrahim Zadran scored 87 runs, and Rahmat Shah scored 77 unbeaten runs. Captain and number 4 Hashmatullah Shahidi also played superbly to score 48* runs in 45 balls. Ibrahim Zadran was picked as the Player of the Match.
