USBRL project nears completion, to link Kashmir to Kanyakumari by year-end

‘Train to run on world’s highest arch Chenab Bridge soon’

Srinagar, Jul 23 (KNO): The 272-kilometre Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project is nearing completion and is expected to be finished by the end of this year, connecting Kashmir to Kanyakumari.

Official sources informed the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that most of the work on the USBRL project has been completed, with the remaining tasks including a 3.2 km tunnel between Katra and Reasi currently in progress.

“The USBRL project is anticipated to be completed by or before December this year. Work on the 3.2 km Tunnel Number 1, located between the Katra and Reasi section, is ongoing,” they said.

The USBRL project is a vital railway infrastructure initiative designed to link the northernmost part of India with the broader Indian rail network. The project involves navigating the challenging terrain of the lesser Himalayas, presenting significant engineering difficulties due to its rugged topography and geological complexities.

Officials said the USBRL project includes 38 tunnels with a total length of 119 km, featuring the country’s longest transportation tunnel, Tunnel T-49, which stretches 12.75 km. The project also has 927 bridges spanning a combined length of 13 km. Among these is the iconic Chenab Bridge, which measures 1,315 meters in length, has an arch span of 467 meters, and stands 359 meters above the riverbed—making it about 35 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower and the world’s highest arch railway bridge.

The Chenab Bridge is an engineering marvel made of steel and concrete, designed to withstand wind speeds of up to 260 km/h and the highest intensity earthquake forces.

Currently, trains operate from Kanyakumari to Katra and from Baramulla to Sangaldan in the Kashmir Valley. With the track between Sangaldan and Reasi now ready, trains are expected to start running from Reasi to Baramulla in the second week of August.

Several trial runs between Sangaldan and Reasi have been carried out successfully. The Commissioner of Railway Safety has also completed a safety trial on this track. Following a thorough inspection of the newly constructed Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest rail bridge, the railways successfully conducted a trial run of an 8-coach MEMU train between Sangaldan in Ramban district and Reasi at a speed of 40 km/h last month,” officials added—(KNO)

The Supreme Court pronounced the verdict for the controversial NEET UG 2024 exam result. The top court has ruled that there will be no re-test for NEET UG 2024

“Data on record is not indicative of a systemic leak of the question paper which would indicate a disruption of the sanctity of the exam,” mentioned CJI in its verdict for the controversial NEET UG 2024 case.

SC mentioned that materials are absent on record to show results of the exam was vitiated or there was a systemic breach in the conduct of the exam.

SC recorded the petitioners’ submissions that there was a systemic failure in the conduct of the exam and the only recourse under the law is to order a re-test. Budget: UPSC gets over Rs 200 crore for examination, selections; Lokpal gets Rs 33.32 cr for 2024-25

New Delhi, Jul 23: Over Rs 200 crore have been earmarked for expenditure on “examination and selection” of the civil servants by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in the 2024-25 Budget announced on Tuesday.

The Commission conducts the civil services examination annually in three stages — preliminary, main and interview — to select officers of Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS), among others.

The UPSC has been given Rs 425.71 crore for the ongoing fiscal in the Budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Of these, Rs 208.99 crore is for expenditure on salaries and allowances of the chairman and members, besides administrative expenses, among others.

A total of Rs 216.72 crore has been allocated for the “expenditure in connection with the examinations, recruitment tests and selections conducted by the Union Public Service Commission”, according to the Budget documents.

The Commission was given Rs 426.24 crore during 2023-24.

Anti-corruption ombudsman Lokpal has been allocated Rs 33.32 crore for 2024-25. The provision is for establishment and construction-related charged expenditure for the Lokpal.

The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has been allocated Rs 51.31 crore for the current financial year.

The probity watchdog was given Rs 44.46 crore for 2023-24, which was revised to Rs 47.73 crore for the last fiscal.

The UPSC has been in the spotlight since probationary IAS officer Puja Khedkar’s case came to fore.

The Commission had recently lodged a criminal case against Khedkar, a 2023 batch probationary IAS officer, for faking her identity to fraudulently avail attempts in the civil services examination beyond eligibility.–(PTI)
