Silent Killer in the Air: Srinagar Residents Inhaling Pollution Equal to 109 Cigarettes a Month

Srinagar: Even without lighting a cigarette, residents of Srinagar may be exposing themselves to the equivalent of heavy smoking, as the city’s deteriorating air quality poses serious health risks.

Recent pollution data shared by independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif Running Kashmir Weather, as per news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC, indicates that breathing Srinagar’s air on high-pollution days can be comparable to smoking several cigarettes daily.

According to data available from AQI monitoring platforms, Srinagar’s average PM2.5 concentration has remained close to 80 µg/m³, with the average Air Quality Index (AQI) hovering around 168, placing it in the “unhealthy” category. During the last 24 hours, AQI levels peaked at 180, while PM2.5 concentrations touched 96 µg/m³, reflecting significantly polluted conditions.

As per a widely cited rule of thumb by Berkeley Earth, exposure to PM2.5 levels of 22 µg/m³ for 24 hours is roughly equivalent to smoking one cigarette per day. Applying this measure, breathing Srinagar’s air for a full day at average pollution levels translates to inhaling the equivalent of about 3.6 cigarettes daily amounting to nearly 25 cigarettes a week or around 109 cigarettes in a month.

Experts caution that while this estimate is based on short-term high-pollution data and not long-term annual averages, the health impact remains serious.

“Cleaner days do not negate the damage caused by exposure during highly polluted days,” environmental analysts note. The calculation follows the formula: Cigarettes = (PM2.5 concentration ÷ 22) × (hours of exposure ÷ 24).

The findings, underline the urgent need for stronger measures to curb air pollution and protect public health, as prolonged exposure to such conditions increases the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, even among non-smokers. (KNC)

KU Reviews Exam Schedule; “No Exams to be Held in January,” says VC Prof Nilofer Khan

KU Reviews Exam Schedule; “No Exams to be Held in January,” says VC Prof Nilofer Khan

Srinagar, Dec 12: A day after widespread student resentment surfaced over “hurried exam schedules” and alleged violation of the Uniform Academic Calendar, the University of Kashmir on Friday convened a key review meeting, chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan, to assess the situation and determine the way forward.

The meeting was attended by Dean Academic Affairs, Prof. Peerzada Shareifudin, and the Controller of Examinations. The agenda was to review student complaints, departmental scheduling, and the Higher Education Department’s strict directive barring universities from holding exams during officially notified vacations.

After the review meeting, Vice Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan told news agency JKNS, “We will not be conducting any examinations in January.” She said that while examinations scheduled in December will continue as planned, only 1–2 spillover papers those that naturally fall in early January will be held.

“There will be no continuous examinations during vacations. Only those December exams where one or two papers extend into early January will proceed. No fresh or full-fledged January exams will be held,” she clarified.

The VC affirmed that student convenience remains central. “The issue was reviewed in detail today. Whatever we do will be strictly in the interest of students,” she added.

Meanwhile, Dean Academic Affairs, Prof. Peerzada Shareifudin, told JKNS that the University’s academic calendar runs only till December 31. “Our calendar is scheduled till 31 December, so examinations fixed for December will be completed as per plan. If in some cases one or two papers fall in early January, those will be conducted nothing more,” he said.

He stressed that the University has not issued any new datesheet for January examinations. “If any department has not issued a datesheet yet, they will conduct exams in February. Sometimes regulatory authorities like AICTE require that 1 or 2 papers fall in January that is a routine practice,” he explained.

Responding to complaints that departments announced revised datesheets suddenly and forced “hurried exams,” Prof. Shareifudin clarified the internal mechanism: “Before any datesheet is approved, the Course Review Committee meets this includes the Dean of the School, Heads of Departments, and class representatives. They are asked about syllabus completion. If they say 100% syllabus is done, then reasonable gaps are given in the datesheet.”

He added that departments whose exams begin in December will follow their notified schedules because the next semester must start on time as per the academic calendar. “Exams that begin on December 12 and other December schedules will continue. Where two papers fall in January, it is always done with student consent,” he said.

The University reiterated that no department has been authorised to conduct full exams during winter vacations, in line with the Higher Education Department’s uniform academic calendar rules.

Hours after the meeting, various departments revised the datesheets, scheduling exams in February. Documents accessed by JKNS state that for M.A. 1st semester, exams are now scheduled from 2 February 2026; for the M.Ed 1st semester, exams are scheduled from 2 February 2026; for M.A. Education 3rd semester, exams are scheduled from 3 February 2026; and for the M.Ed 3rd semester, exams are scheduled from 3 February 2026.

As reported earlier, students at the University of Kashmir from various programmes had voiced strong dissatisfaction and rising frustration over the sudden announcement of revised datesheets, accusing the University of “wrapping up exams in a hurried manner without considering students’ preparation time or academic readiness.”

Students were fuming after the issue came to light following a stern directive from the Higher Education Department (HED), which instructed all universities and autonomous colleges across Jammu and Kashmir to strictly adhere to the Uniform Academic Calendar 2022 and refrain from conducting any examinations during officially notified vacation periods. NEET PG Counselling 2025 Round 2: Choice Filling Deadline Extended Again, 135 New Seats Added – Latest Update for Medical Aspirants

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has once again extended the choice filling and choice locking deadline for NEET PG Counselling 2025 Round 2, providing additional time for candidates to submit and lock their preferences. Alongside this extension, MCC has also updated the Round 2 seat matrix, adding 135 new MD and MS seats across various medical institutions in the country. This latest update has brought relief and renewed hope for thousands of postgraduate medical aspirants who are eagerly awaiting seat allotments.

The official announcement was published after MCC reviewed the requests from candidates and institutions. With the counselling process already witnessing multiple revisions, this extension ensures that students do not miss out on the opportunity to make informed choices based on the newly added seats.

Revised Dates for NEET PG 2025 Round 2 Choice Filling

As per the updated schedule released by MCC, the new deadlines are as follows:

  • Last Date for Choice Filling: 13 December 2025, up to 1 PM
  • Choice Locking Window: From 4 PM on 12 December to 1 PM on 13 December 2025

Candidates must complete both steps—choice filling and choice locking—within the revised window. Missing the deadline may lead to disqualification from the Round 2 seat allotment process.

All updates have been published on the official MCC website at mcc.nic.in, and candidates are advised to cross-check the revised schedule to avoid any confusion.

135 New Seats Added to the NEET PG 2025 Round 2 Seat Matrix

One of the most significant updates in Round 2 counselling is the addition of 135 new postgraduate medical seats. These seats span various specialties under MD and MS programs. This move by MCC is expected to increase the number of candidates who may secure admission in this round.

According to reports from multiple education sources, West Bengal received the highest number of newly added seats, followed by several other states where institutions had recently obtained approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC). The addition of new seats at such a crucial stage of the counselling process improves the chances for aspirants who may have been on the borderline in earlier rounds.

This revision also comes at a time when many medical colleges across India submitted updated seat availability lists following infrastructure improvements or renewed NMC permissions.

Why the Deadline Was Extended Again

The Round 2 counselling of NEET PG 2025 has seen more than one extension. MCC decided to push the deadline further because:

  1. Last-minute seat additions required candidates to re-evaluate their priorities.
  2. Many students requested extra time to review the updated seat matrix.
  3. Technical delays and heavy traffic on the MCC portal prompted the need for more flexibility.
  4. Institutions submitted fresh seat availability updates close to the deadline.

The extension is expected to offer greater transparency and fairness in the admission process, ensuring that all aspirants have adequate time to make informed choices based on the newly added seats.

Impact of the Extension on NEET PG Aspirants

The revised deadline and seat addition have brought multiple benefits for candidates:

🔹 More Opportunities to Secure a Seat

The addition of 135 seats increases the overall availability in Round 2, giving candidates with mid- or lower-ranks a better chance of securing admissions in reputable medical colleges.

🔹 More Time to Strategize Choices

With new seats introduced, aspirants now have extra time to carefully analyze and modify their preferences based on location, specialization, college reputation, and ranking.

🔹 Reduced Counselling Pressure

The extension reduces the stress many candidates were facing due to time limitations, especially those waiting for updated seat allotment matrices.

🔹 Improved Transparency

Allowing extra time ensures that the seat allocation process remains fair and transparent for all participating students.

What Candidates Should Do Before the Deadline

Aspirants participating in Round 2 are advised to:

  1. Visit the MCC website and log in to the NEET PG portal.
  2. Review the updated seat matrix, especially the newly added 135 seats.
  3. Rearrange choices based on new availability.
  4. Lock choices before 1 PM on 13 December 2025.
  5. Save a copy of the choice-locking confirmation for future reference.

Candidates must remember that un-locked choices will not be considered for Round 2 seat allotment.

Upcoming Steps in NEET PG Counselling 2025

After the completion of the choice filling and locking process, MCC will proceed with the following steps:

  • Processing of Round 2 seat allotment
  • Release of seat allotment results
  • Reporting to allotted colleges
  • Verification of documents and completion of admission formalities

Candidates who do not secure a seat in Round 2 will still have the opportunity to participate in the mop-up round, which will be announced after Round 2 concludes.

How to Make the Best Use of the Added Seats

With 135 additional seats now available, candidates should adopt a strategic approach:

  • Check state-wise distribution of the new seats.
  • Identify whether seats have opened up in preferred specialties such as General Medicine, Pediatrics, Anesthesia, Dermatology, or Obstetrics & Gynecology.
  • Compare the new seat availability with previous cut-offs to predict chances of allotment.
  • Increase the number of choices listed to widen admission possibilities.
  • Balance preferences between top-tier colleges and moderately competitive institutions to maximize chances.

This approach ensures that candidates optimize their seat options and boost their chances in Round 2.

The latest update in NEET PG Counselling 2025 Round 2, involving both the extension of the choice filling deadline and the addition of 135 new seats, is a highly welcome development for postgraduate medical aspirants. MCC’s decision ensures greater fairness, additional opportunities, and increased flexibility for candidates navigating the competitive admission process.

With the deadline now extended until 13 December 2025, students should make full use of this extra time to carefully evaluate their choices and secure the best possible seat based on the updated seat matrix.

Staying updated through the official MCC website and verifying all dates and instructions will help candidates avoid errors and ensure a smooth counselling experience.
