ACB arrests Girdawar, Lumberdar with Rs 20,000 bribe red-handed in Srinagar

Srinagar, Apr 10 (KNO): Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Thursday said to have trapped and arrested Girdawar of Chatabal and Lumberdar from Halqa Habakadal, Srinagar red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000.

As per a statement issued to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), a spokesman said that ACB received a written complaint alleging therein that Ayaz Ahmad Hurra, Girdawar, Chatabal, Srinagar, who is holding additional charge of Patwari Halqa Habakadal and Halqa Shivpora is demanding Rs 50,000 as bribe in lieu of issuance of revenue extracts required for sale deed of an old house located at Mandir Bagh, Srinagar.

“As per the complaint, the complainant was forced to pay Rs 30,000 a few days ago and remaining Rs 20,000 was asked to be paid today in order to receive the requisite documents. The bribe demand was communicated through Lamberdar (tout) Rafiq Ahmad who was acting in connivance with the Girdawar,” the statement reads.

Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached ACB Srinagar and submitted a written complaint, requesting legal action against the accused public servants. Upon receipt of the complaint, a pre-trap verification was conducted, which established the demand of bribe, accordingly a case under FIR number 06/2025 under section 7 PC Act 1988 and 61(2) BNS was registered at Police Station ACB Srinagar and investigation was taken up, the ACB spokesman said.

During the course of investigation, a trap team was constituted which laid a successful trap and caught the accused public servant Ayaz Ahmad Hurra, Girdwar Chatabal (holding additional charge of Patwari Halaqa Habakadal and Halqa Shivpora Srinagar) red-handed while demanding and accepting Rs 20,000 as bribe from the complainant through Mohammad Rafiq Sheikh, Lumberdar, the statement added.

Schoolgirl duo in south Kashmir’s Pulwama fakes abduction to bunk classes

Srinagar, Apr 10: In a bizarre incident, two schoolgirls in J&K’s Pulwama alleged an abduction bid to bunk classes before coming clean on the incident, police said on Thursday.

A police statement said that April 7, the Pulwama police station had received a written complaint from Bilal Ahmad Ganaie, son of Ghulam Nabi Ganai, resident of Ratnipora Pulwama, against an unknown driver of vehicle (JK01AB-2069) to the effect that at about 9.30 a.m., his daughter and her classmate, aged 10 years, were going to their school, but on the way, the said unknown driver had forcibly got them into the car and tried to kidnap both of them.

Upon this complaint, an FIR (91/2025) under section 137(2) BNS was registered at the Pulwama police station, and an investigation was launched. However, police found that the girls had made up the incident.

“During the course of the investigation, the statements of parents and minor girls were recorded before a court, where they stated that no one had kidnapped them and they went to Nadoo from Ratnipora by foot,” the statement said.

“CCTV footage of the area was also collected, which clearly indicated that neither any vehicle had forcibly picked them up nor were they kidnapped; they gave statements to avoid going to school, and the same was then corroborated by their parents,” it added.

Police cautioned parents to ensure that their wards are properly educated about the law. They should be properly advised that accusations like kidnapping and abduction are very serious crimes, and in such cases, the police are duty-bound to go by the statement of the complainant.

“Careless and casual attitude of parents and children can have serious consequences against those falsely accused of a heinous crime they never committed,” the police said.

This is probably the first case of its kind in Kashmir, where parents and schoolgirls blindly accused an innocent car driver of having kidnapped them while the schoolgirl and her classmate had gone on a stroll after bunking their classes.

After Rijiju bulldozed Waqf Bill through Parliament, CM Omar gave him red carpet welcome in Kashmir: Mehbooba Mufti

Srinagar, Apr 09 (KNO): Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday said that after Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju bulldozed Waqf Amendment Bill through Parliament he was given red carpet welcome in Kashmir by J&K Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah.

Mehbooba, while talking to the reporters here, according to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said, “After bulldozing the Waqf Amendment Bill through Parliament, Minister Kiren Rijiju strategically chose to visit Kashmir.”

“He (Rijiju) was given red carpet welcome by the Chief Minister of India’s only Muslim majority state – a move that seemed designed & deliberate to signal to the 24 crore Muslims across India that their views hold little weight when the leader of the country’s only Muslim-majority region stands in support,” she added.

Former J&K Chief Minister while referring to the “chance meeting” between Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the Union Minister Rijiju at the Tulip Garden here said, “The visit set against the backdrop of Asia’s largest tulip garden felt like a public celebration of the community’s marginalisation and disempowerment.”

The PDP president further said, “Omar Abdullah’s actions not only deepened the sense of alienation and helplessness within the Muslim community but also lent legitimacy to this unilateral decision widely perceived as dismissive of their interests,” she said—(KNO)
