Gold Surges for Second Day, Hits New All-Time High of Rs 95,935 per 10g

Gold Continues To Glitter For 2nd Day; Hit Fresh Peak Of ₹95,935/10 G

NEW DELHI,Apr 17: Gold prices continued their upward trend for the second straight session, touched a new all-time high of ₹95,935 per 10 grams , climbing ₹274 on Thursday, driven by firm spot demand.

On the the Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd., the precious metal contracts for June delivery hit the record high of ₹95,935 per 10 grams in the morning trade

Later, it pared the gains to trade ₹89 or 0.09% to ₹95,750 per 10 grams with an open interest of 22,403 lots.

On Wednesday (April 16), Gold had touched an all-time high of ₹94,781 per 10 grams in futures trade.

Analysts said persistent uncertainty surrounding the U.S. trade policy, waning demand for the dollar, and Treasury securities have reinforced gold’s appeal as a preferred safe-haven asset.
On the global front, gold futures rose to hit a fresh peak of $3,371.89 per ounce in New York. Later, it pulled back from the record level to trade at $3,340.61 per ounce.

“Gold prices surged…as geopolitical stress between the U.S. and China intensified. U.S. President Donald Trump’s move to investigate new tariffs on critical Chinese imports has shaken market sentiment.

“Simultaneously, a weakening U.S. dollar — near a three-year low — made gold more appealing to foreign investors,” Rahul Kalantri, Vice President of commodities at Mehta Equities Ltd., said.

Adding to the bullish outlook for gold, global investment firm Goldman Sachs raised its year-end gold forecast to $3,700 per ounce and sees potential for $4,000 per ounce by mid-2026. (Agencies)

Fresh Weather Advisory for J&K, Heavy Rain/ Snow Predicted from this date

Western Disturbance to Hit J&K from April 18, IMD Issues Weather Advisory

“Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain/Snow and Strong Winds Expected Across Higher Reaches”: Met Dept

Srinagar, Apr 17 (JKNS): An active western disturbance is likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining areas from April 18, with the India Meteorological Department predicting widespread light to moderate rain and snow, especially in the higher reaches, till April 20.

The peak intensity of this system is expected during the night of April 18 to late April 19, according to the forecast.

As per the weather advisory issued by Meteorological Department Srinagar, addressed to the Divisional Commissioners of Kashmir and Jammu, a copy of which lies with news agency JKNS, the system is expected to bring heavy rain and snowfall over Pirpanjal Range of Jammu Division and higher reaches of Kashmir Division, including Anantnag-Pahalgam, Kulgam, Sinthan Pass, Shopian, Pir Ki Gali, Sonamarg-Zojila, Bandipora-Razdan Pass, Gulmarg and Kupwara-Sadhna Pass.

The advisory further states that the disturbance may cause thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms, and strong winds with speeds of 40-50 km/h, gusting up to 70 km/h at several locations.

Due to this weather system, surface transport is likely to be affected, especially on the Jammu-Srinagar and Srinagar-Leh National Highways and other key routes in middle and higher elevations. There are also chances of landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones over vulnerable areas. Farmers have been advised to halt all farming operations from April 18 until the afternoon of April 21.

Authorities have warned of a rise in water levels in rivers, streams, and nallahs, which may lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas. (JKNS)

BJP Talks of Uplifting Muslims While Grabbing Waqf Land, Demolishing Mosques: Mehbooba Mufti

BJP Talks of Uplifting Muslims While Grabbing Waqf Land, Demolishing Mosques: Mehbooba Mufti

Urges BJP to Talk with Kashmir’s, Rather Than Targeting Youth with UAPA, PSA

Srinagar, Apr 17 (JKNS): PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday accused the BJP of hypocrisy, saying the party speaks of uplifting backward Muslims while simultaneously demolishing mosques and occupying Waqf land.

“You talk about the welfare of backward Muslims, yet your government is demolishing mosques in Uttar Pradesh and laying hands on Waqf properties. In Kashmir, Waqf became the inheritance of one family, but Mufti Sahab set an example by establishing colleges and religious schools on Waqf land. At the very least, don’t snatch our land,” Mehbooba said at a public gathering in Srinagar as per news agency JKNS.

Mehbooba condemned recent incidents in West Bengal, saying, “What happened in Murshidabad was wrong. You stood with those trying to destroy Muslims.”

She said India belongs to all faiths. “India is the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. You treat it as though it belonged to the Mughal Empire. This country united Sikhs, Muslims, and Hindus. Don’t break this unity. We have carried this nation with our hands—don’t wound those very hands.”

“The heirs of the Mughals are among you, not us,” she said, taking a swipe at the BJP.

On former RAW chief A.S. Dulat’s recent comments, she said, “I wasn’t surprised. The National Conference has betrayed Kashmiris since the 1990s. When we allied with the BJP, people were angry with us. But we only talked to them for two months. It was NC who went ahead. Both Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah met the Prime Minister on August 3. Dulat said Farooq was ready to go with BJP—I’m not surprised.”

Mehbooba said her party introduced four important bills, including on electricity and daily wagers, and brought a resolution against the Waqf Bill.

On the PAGD alliance, she said, “I created the alliance to bring everyone together, not for personal gain. I accepted the Iftar invitation despite my workers being upset. They asked me why I went—I told them it was for unity.”

She criticised Omar Abdullah for “moving in the Tulip Garden with the Union Minority Affairs Minister who brought the Waqf Bill,” at a time when Waqf lands in J&K were being targeted.

Mehbooba also expressed concern over the broader situation in India. “Today, people who die aren’t even allowed to be buried in graveyards. I had written to Hurriyat leaders in 2016, but they missed the opportunity and closed their doors. India took advantage of that.”

In a message to BJP, she said, “Hurriyat may have been on horseback then, but now it’s you who are riding high—arresting youth under UAPA and PSA, seizing passports, and terminating employees. I urge you to talk to the people of Kashmir. Kashmir is the crown of India—let it remain that way.” (JKNS)

Nationwide Protests Lead Supreme Court to Halt Amendments to Waqf Act

0

New Delhi, April 17: The Supreme Court has issued an interim stay on the implementation of the controversial amendments to the Waqf Act, 2025, in response to widespread protests and over 70 legal petitions challenging the new law’s constitutionality.

The court’s order halts all new appointments to Waqf boards and freezes any changes to the status of Waqf properties—including the contentious ‘waqf by user’ clause—until May 5. This decision comes in the wake of violent demonstrations, particularly in West Bengal, where three people have reportedly died during clashes with authorities.

Opposition parties, including the Congress, DMK, and AIMIM, have strongly criticized the amendments, alleging that the inclusion of non-Muslims on Waqf boards and the scrapping of ‘waqf by user’ provisions infringe upon the religious and administrative rights of the Muslim community.

The apex court emphasized that the interim relief is aimed at restoring peace and allowing a thorough judicial review of the concerns raised, particularly regarding potential religious discrimination and government overreach.

A final verdict will depend on further hearings, scheduled to resume early next month.
