Climate Change & Disaster Risk Reduction: KU brings together 17 youth delegates from G-20 countries

Experts suggest innovative ideas for farmers amid climate change challenges; KU students take part in brainstorming session

Sajid Raina

Srinagar, May 11 (KNO): The University of Kashmir Thursday set the stage for an extraordinary convergence of international and local youth by hosting a ground-breaking climate symposium under India’s G20 Presidency.

With the theme “Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction: Making Sustainability a Way of Life,” the event, as per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), brought together an illustrious cohort of 17 youth delegates from G20 countries, alongside a multitude of students from various educational institutions.

Over the course of two days, the University of Kashmir became a melting pot of diverse perspectives, fostering a rich exchange of ideas on combatting climate change.

In addition to the esteemed international delegates from Indonesia, Mexico, Turkey, Russia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the United States, Brazil, and Nigeria, the symposium witnessed the enthusiastic participation of 108 students from the university itself, 34 students from schools across Jammu and Kashmir, 57 students from colleges in Srinagar, and 11 representatives from colleges and universities in Jammu.

The event also saw the active involvement of 33 delegates from the Department of Youth Affairs (DoYA), 25 Y20 Secretariat delegates, and 25 dynamic student activists.

Dr. Robert Pal (Montana Technological University, USA) highlighted that climate change is impacting biodiversity in multiple ways. He stressed the importance of devising ecological restoration strategies based on multiple species, rather than monoculture plantations.

Dr Ruchhit RD (National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, India) talked about the increasing incidence of extreme rainfall events seen in the Indian Monsoon. He called for awareness among farmers, particularly reorienting the sowing season as per changing climatic patterns.

Dr Wazida Rahman (Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab, India) stressed on the concept of environmental justice, which is akin to climate justice pitched by India vociferously during recent negotiations at multilateral forums.

Throughout the symposium, foreign dignitaries and local students engaged in a remarkable display of intellectual prowess and unwavering determination to create a sustainable future. The halls echoed with impassioned debates, as ideas were presented, dissected, and reassembled in an ongoing effort to find innovative solutions.

“Climate change is not just an environmental issue; it is an existential threat to humanity. We, as the youth, bear the responsibility to drive meaningful change and hold global leaders accountable for their actions.” Said a, youth delegate from India.

“By fostering international collaboration, we can pool our resources and knowledge to develop sustainable technologies that will benefit us all. It’s time for global unity in the face of a planetary crisis.” – Sofia, another student from Kashmir University said.

Aisha Another student said: “As Kashmiris, we witness first-hand the impacts of climate change on our land and communities. This symposium empowers us to raise our voices and work together towards a resilient and environmentally conscious future for our region.” William, a student from US stated: “This gathering of diverse minds highlights the urgency of our climate predicament. We must act now to mitigate the devastating effects of climate change and secure a better tomorrow for future generations.”

The symposium at the University of Kashmir not only fostered cross-cultural understanding but also laid the groundwork for ongoing collaboration and joint initiatives. As the event concluded, the participants departed with a renewed sense of purpose and an unwavering commitment to implement sustainable practices within their respective communities.

Meanwhile, a top administrative official said that this gathering marked a turning point in the fight against climate change, as young minds from around the world merged their passion, knowledge, and determination. “It showcased the University of Kashmir’s dedication to facilitating meaningful exchanges and nurturing the leaders of tomorrow. By embracing the power of youth and fostering global solidarity, we inch closer to a planet that thrives sustainably for generations to come,” he said—(KNO)

DSEK mulls ‘punitive action’ against private schools prescribing non-JKBOSE textbooks

Srinagar May 11 (KNO): The Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) is mulling action against private schools prescribing textbooks for students other than books prescribed by JK Board of School Education (JKBOSE).

As per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the move comes after it came to fore that some private schools were prescribing textbooks of private publishers to students from class 6th onwards, in violation of Government orders.

In wake of the complaints, the DSEK, as per the official communication addressed to Secretary JKBOSE, has sought list of schools from JKBOSE to initiate “punitive action” where the school management has prescribed unapproved curriculum or textbooks from private publications for classes 6th, 7th and 8th against the instructions of J&K Board of School Education.

As already reported the J&K government has made it mandatory for all the private schools to prescribe JKBOSE published textbooks for students from class 6th to 8th from the current academic session.

The Board has warned the private schools of action if the directions will not be implemented on ground.

Already, all the JKBOSE affiliated private schools prescribe JKBOSE published text books for students from class 9th to 10th—(KNO)

G-20 in Kashmir: It’s an event of normalcy; Schools, markets to remain open, no restrictions planned, says Top Official in J&K Admin

G-20 in Kashmir: It’s an event of normalcy; Schools, markets to remain open, no restrictions planned, says Top Official in J&K Admin

‘Traffic advisory to be issued to facilitate movement of delegates; all arrangements on right track’

Nasir Azam

Srinagar, May 11 (KNO): The G-20 Tourism Working Group summit slated in Srinagar from May 22 to May 24 is an event of “normalcy” and there will be no curbs anywhere while schools, colleges and the markets will remain open, a top official of the J&K administration revealed to news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO).

He said that traffic on all routes will play normally and to facilitate the foreign delegates, a proper traffic advisory will be issued in advance. “There is no question of imposing restrictions/curbs from G-20 Tourism Working Group meetings in Srinagar on May 22 to May 24,” the official said. “G-20 is an event of normalcy and imposing curbs can spoil everything.”

For the first time, under India’s presidency G-20 meetings will be held in Srinagar amid tight security cover. “Stage is set and all preparations are in the final stage. Everything is on the right track,” the official said, wishing not to be named.

He said that a traffic advisory will be issued days ahead of the event to facilitate the visiting delegates. “Discussion is on to ensure a people-friendly traffic plan to facilitate the travel of foreign delegates during their stay in Kashmir,” the official said, adding that “traffic advisory will be issued in a people-friendly manner.” Gossip lounges across Srinagar were ripe with the rumours that there would be imposition of restrictions and schools may be closed in view of the G-20 event in the capital city of Kashmir. The foreign delegates are believed to travel to north Kashmir during their stay in the Valley, official sources said.

Elaborate security arrangements have been put in place to ensure smooth passage of the event. J&K administration is of the belief that G-20 is a great opportunity to showcase the tourism potential of the UT at the global platform and to give the once ailing tourism industry a global push. Pertinently, Kashmir has been witnessing record tourism arrivals since past few years and the tourism officials’ belief that this year, the number is set to break previous records.

Marine Commandos and NSG will guard the main venue in Srinagar—SKICC on the banks of Dal Lake besides hotels and lodges where the foreign guests will stay. The venue will remain under aerial surveillance while the security grid in Kashmir has framed the counter strategy to foil all possible threats—Vehicle-borne IEDs, fidayeen strikes, sticky bomb attacks, drone attacks and grenade attacks. The Army will be maintaining a highest level on highways and other vital road links in Kashmir. The security arrangements were given a final touch by the Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla during May 9 meeting at SKICC that was followed by another review at Police Headquarters. “A fool-proof security cover will remain in place for the G-20 events in Kashmir,” a top security official said—(KNO)
