LG Manoj Sinha Applauds Higher Education Department in Jammu and Kashmir for Infusing Optimism in the Future

Higher Education dept in JK instilling new sense of optimism for future: LG Manoj Sinha

Pulwama, Nov 15 (KNO): Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Wednesday said that the higher education department in the Union Territory has embraced a fresh perspective, paving the way for positive advancements and instilling a renewed sense of optimism for the future.

As per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), during the inauguration of the National Academia-Industry Conclave on the 18th Foundation Day of the Islamic University of Science & Technology, Awantipora, the LG said that the higher education department of Jammu and Kashmir has been reaching new heights in recent years, signaling a new dawn for the Union Territory.

He added that the conventional model of higher educational institutions is no longer sufficient to equip the current and future workforce or meet the evolving needs of industries, given the rapid advancements in cutting-edge technology.

The LG stated, “The academic world and industries need to collaborate strongly and function as one campus. Universities should adjust their curriculum according to industry needs and grant students access to new technologies with a transformative impact on today’s world.”

“The inventions of yesterday form the knowledge foundation for students, but the technological progress of tomorrow hinges on the collaboration between academia and industry,” he added.

Reciting a verse, “Nadi ne dhoop se kya kah diya rawaani mein, ujaale paanv patkane lage hain paani mein,” he expressed that IUST University has undergone significant progress and transformation in recent years. In the past, during the Foundation Day celebrations, the university used to organize a few lectures to mark its presence. However, now there is a remarkable transformation visible in the institution.

“Gaining degrees from institutions is not the real achievement; instead, it’s about making yourself more creative and expressing your inner self and skills,” he said.

He added that people should explore the inner selves of figures like Mahatma Gandhi, Newton, Einstein, and others, who, despite their academic backgrounds, made significant names in the universe.

“Students should go beyond the four walls of the classroom and engage with everything new that is happening,” he added. On November 19, a group of 65 students from our universities will venture outside the valley for a project-based learning program, providing them with a significant boost, and this initiative will continue in the future—(KNO)

Amid erratic power supply in Valley, Govt says adequate electricity available

Supplying power as per demands, more electricity to be procured in peak winters if demand increases: Pr Secy PDD

Owais Gul

Srinagar, Nov 15 (KNO): With no let-up in power crisis amid chilly weather conditions in Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir administration said that adequate electricity is being supplied to the consumers and that whenever demand arises, additional power will be procured at apt time.

According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the consumers from different areas across the Valley have been complaining of erratic power supply.

“There is no adherence to the power schedule announced by the government. The electricity in our areas is playing hide & seek,” the consumers said, adding that there is hardly any hour when the electricity doesn’t play hide and seek.

“The schedule of 4.5 hours power cuts in metered areas is not being adhered to. We are being pushed to the wall, despite the promises of adequate electricity after the installation of smart meters,” the consumers from Srinagar areas said.

Meanwhile, an official from the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) told KNO that there is an improvement in the power scenario from the last four days now. “The power cuts have been reduced in the last four days,” the official said.

He, however, said that the power cuts are expected to reduce further in the coming days. At present, the demand is 1600-1700 MWs, which is being supplied to the consumers through the already announced power schedule, he said.

Principal Secretary, Power Development Department (PDD), H Rajesh Prasad, when asked about the shortage of electricity, told KNO that adequate electricity is being supplied to the people. “Adequate electricity is available at present and is being supplied to the consumers as per the demand,” he said.

However, he said that in the peak winters, if the demand increases, more electricity will be procured for the people—(KNO)

Pakistan Cricket Board Announces New Skippers for T20 and Test Cricket

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Wednesday announced left-handed batter Shan Masood and pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi as captains for Test and Twenty20 international (T20I) format, respectively.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the PCB shared the new captains of the Pakistan cricket team for the Test and T20I format.

Presenting our captains, [Shan Masood] has been appointed Test captain while [Shaheen Shah Afridi] will lead the T20I side.

The development came after star batter Babar Azam stepped down as Pakistan all-format captain following the team’s dismal performance in the ongoing World Cup 2023, ARY News reported on Wednesday.

Babar Azam’s resignation came shortly after he met Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Management Committee Chairman Zaka Ashraf at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium.

Azam’s captaincy and his future in the role came under question following the national team’s below-par performance in the World Cup 2023.

The team suffered five losses, the most in their World Cup history, including their first defeat against Afghanistan in ODIs also their first against South Africa in World Cups this century.

Under the batter’s leadership, Pakistan failed to qualify for the semifinals as they finished fifth in the standings with eight points.
