Kashmiri student dies in Khanna hostel

LUDHIANA: A student from Kashmir, who was pursuing B. Tech from a private institute in Khanna, died under mysterious circumstances in his hostel room on Thursday, police said.

The victim hails from Baramulla in Kashmir and was enrolled in B.Tech second year at Gulzar Group of Institutes in Libra village of Khanna. The hostel was located in the institute’s premises.

According to the students at the institute, he was not well and did not wake up in the morning following which his roommates raised an alarm, triggering panic in the hostel.

The victim’s roommates along with the hostel staff rushed him to the civil hospital where doctors declared him dead.

The Sadar Khanna police have initiated investigation into the matter and questioned the victim’s roommates and his other Kashmir-based friends studying in the university.

Inspector Davinderpal Singh, SHO, Sadar Khanna police station, said that after having dinner on Wednesday night at around 9.30pm, he went to his room to sleep, informing his roommates that he is not feeling well. On Thursday, when he did not wake up for breakfast, his roommates raised an alarm.

The inspector said that his family members were informed about his death.

ASI Harwinder Singh, who is investigating the case, said that the family members have taken the body of the deceased along with them while informing the police that they do not want any investigation in the matter.–(Hindustan Times)

Srinagar, 19 Jan: The Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JK BOSE) inhouse printing of attendence sheets, amid technical challenges faced by certain schools in retrieving the Roll Number slips of their students from the online portal.

According to an official order issued by Jammu and Kashmir Board of school education reads, In Continuation to Order no: 01-B of 2024 dated: 03.01.2024, it is hereby ordered that in case any exigency/hardship is faced by the schools while downloading Roll Number slips (Admit Cards) of students appearing in various BOSE examinations from their school Portals, the respective ITSS Section of JK BOSE shall print and provide the hard copies of the same to these Institutions through concerned Examination Section/s on the formal request of the institution/s after obtaining approval from the Competent Authority, it reads.

Under this new directive, if any school encounters difficulties while accessing the Roll Number slips of their students from the school portal, they are required to submit a formal request to the respective IT Support Section (ITSS) of JK BOSE. This request must be accompanied by the necessary approval from the Competent Authority of the institution.

Upon receiving the formal request with the appropriate approval, the concerned Examination Section of JK BOSE will oversee the printing and provision of hard copies of the Roll Number slips to the respective institutions. This process will help schools ensure that students have access to their Roll Number slips without any hindrance, thus enabling them to appear in the examinations seamlessly.

Srinagar, Jan 18 (GNS): Kashmir Power Distribution Company Limited (KPDCL) Thursday announced an increase in curtailment by 2 to 2.5 hours across Kashmir Valley during peak hours temporarily.

“This is for the information of the general public that due to a drastic reduction in power generation resulting in reduced availability of power, KPDCL shall be forced to temporarily increase the curtailment by 2 to 2.5 hours across Kashmir Valley during peak hours,” KPDCL said in a post on X, according to GNS.

“The temporary increase shall be reversed as soon as sufficient power is available,” it said, adding, “The inconvenience caused is deeply regretted.” (GNS)

Srinagar, Jan 18 (KNO): Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri on Thursday said that there will be no restrictions in place on the Republic-Day 2024 and urged people to take part in the celebrations of the event.

Speaking to the media at the Srinagar office, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said 26th January function holds a significant importance and this year there will be no restrictions in place.

He highlighted the shift from the past when restrictions were deemed necessary for maintaining law and order. “Today, there is a vast improvement in the overall situation, so no restrictions will be imposed on January 26 this year,” he assured.

Bidhuri recalled the participation of a large number of people in last year’s celebrations at Bakshi Stadium. He also urged people to join the celebrations in large numbers this year as well—(KNO)

Aadhaar will not be considered as valid proof of date of birth: EPFO

New Delhi, Jan 18: Retirement fund body EPFO has said it will no longer use Aadhaar as a valid document for proof of date of birth.

In an official circular on January 16, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) said the decision to remove Aadhaar was taken following a directive from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

As per the circular, Aadhaar is also being removed from the list of documents for correction in date of birth.

The UIDAI in a circular on December 22, 2023, had said an Aadhaar number can be used for establishing identity of an individual, subject to authentication, and thereby, per se, it is not a proof of date of birth.

The UIDAI also noted that many bodies likes the EPFO have been using Aadhaar to validate date of birth.

UIDAI had also said that many high courts in their orders have highlighted that Aadhaar is not a valid proof of date of birth.

Various documents like birth certificate issued by the Registrar of Births and Deaths, marksheet issued by any recognised government board or university, PAN (Permanent Account Number) card are used as valid proof for date of birth.–(PTI)
