They added that bids have been invited to set up 643 new fuel stations across Jammu and Kashmir union territory and 34 in UT Ladakh.

“The development came for the first time after abrogation of article 370 and reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir, post August 2019,” sources said adding, “the last time the expansion of OMCs retail network was carried out in 2018.”

The applicants have been asked to visit website www.petrolpumpdealerchayan.in for detailed advertisement and brochure and submit online form application with processing fee by September 27.

Though availability of suitable land at the advertised location, stretch is crucial but the applicants for SC/ST locations can still apply without land initially, but they are expected to offer land when called for.

Around 30 pc increase in tourist rush since renovation, says Polo View Market president

Around 30 pc increase in tourist rush since renovation, says Polo View Market president

Shopkeepers say govt officials should regularly visit market to address issues that arise from time to time

Rehan Qayoom Mir

Srinagar, Jul 04 (KNO): Srinagar’s famous Polo View Market witnessed a 20 to 30 percent increase in tourist visits and has become a “wireless market” since it underwent renovation recently, the shopkeepers here said.

Talking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Haji Mohammad Ismail, president of Polo View Market in Srinagar, said the market expanded under the Srinagar Smart City project and gained international and domestic recognition.

“Before the renovation, the market already had a good footfall, but the renovation gave it a significant boost. The G-20 summit and visits by foreign delegates have played a major role in promoting this market,” he said.

He said there has been an increase in the number of foreign tourists visiting the market. “Even government guests visit here as it has been beautified to its highest potential,” Ismail said.

The renovation of the market, established in 1954, took approximately 14 months, and on May 12, 2023, it was inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

Ismail said the market is now dust-free and beautified, making it the first “wireless market” in the entire Srinagar city. The seating arrangements here are also convenient for both males and females, allowing them to sit outside easily while the shops are busy with customers, he said.

“While the market is witnessing an increase in tourist footfall, the rush is not excessively high due to the low number of foreign tourists. However, we hope that foreign tourists will visit in large numbers in the future, In Sha Allah,” he mentioned.

Amjad Gulzar, the owner of K Salama, while talking to KNO said, “Before the renovation of Polo View Market, we used to have a good number of local, national and international tourists. However, after revamping the market, there has been a significant change as both local and foreign tourists have increased. Polo View now looks completely different and has become an iconic site in Srinagar.”

“People visit here during the day as well as at night, and footfall has increased by 20 to 30%. Likewise, the sales have also increased, and overall, there has been an increase in activity, with both locals and non-locals frequenting the market,” Amjad said. “Foreign tourism is still recovering as the COVID-19 pandemic has put a halt to it. The restrictions imposed worldwide are lifted but the impact is still there even after many years, and foreign tourism is gradually increasing.”

Another shopkeeper wishing anonymity said, “This market is beautiful, and I personally feel that it should be well-maintained. The lighting and other facilities should be regularly checked, and if any issues arise, such as with electric poles or flooring, the government should quickly address them on own and it shouldn’t be informed by shopkeepers.”

Polo View was first established in 1954 by Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad who was the Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir at that time. Initially located near the bund, it was later shifted to the side of Lal Chowk, and this market is famous for its domestic English market in the past and has always been a popular destination for prominent figures.

The history of Poloview Market reveals that its name originated from the time when the Maharajas of that time used to play Polo in the ground adjacent to the market. Subsequently, the market was named Polo View Market. It is the oldest market in Srinagar City famous all over India and beyond—(KNO)

Raja Syed Rather

Srinagar, Jul 04 (KNO): National Conference vice-president and former J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said that there is no expectation that the rights that were snatched from the people on 5 August 2019, will be restored under the BJP rule.

Omar, while talking to the reporters, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said that “We have been saying from day one that whatever has been snatched from us, we have no expectations that it will be restored by the incumbent government. We want our rights back through legal procedure, we hope that the hearing in this regard in the Supreme Court will be held frequently.”

Reacting to a query he said that the efforts were always on to spilt the opposition parties everywhere like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka and even the J&K parties have been split and new parties were created.

On being asked about Shah Faesal withdrawing plea challenging Article 370, Omar said that he has the right to do whatever he wants, he can take away the plea, as he was not forced to file a plea and nobody has forced him to withdraw it.

Reply to a question about opposition unity at the national level, he said that strength of opposition can be decided only in elections.

We have not set any parameter yet but have sought report of poor performance: Official

Bhat Imran

Srinagar, Jul 04 (KNO): The Jammu and Kashmir School Education Department is likely to withhold ‘Annual Increment’ to the teaching faculty having poor performance in annual regular results of 10th and 12th standard.

Top officials of the department told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the School Education Department has not set any parameters to determine the output of annual regular results of 10th and 12th standard.

“However, we have sought a report from the concerned CEOs about the schools and teaching staff who have not given good output as per the expectation and requirements,” the official said.

It also said that the government will soon make a decision on the issue.

On Tuesday, CEO Kathua said not to release the Annual Increment of any teaching staff whose result is less than 50 percent.

“As the academic session 2022-2023 is over and the result of 8th to 12th classes has been declared and annual increment of most of the teaching staff falls due on July-01-2023,” CEO Kathua said.

The officer accordingly directed the concerned DDOs of School Education Department of district Kathua not to release the Annual Increment of any teaching staff whose ‘result is less than 50 percent till the direction received from the higher authority.”

Earlier an official said, “Director of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) has ordered all the concerned stakeholders to release and sanction Annual Increment on the basis of the performance of the respective school.”

A day before, CEO Anantnag in circular informed all the DDOs falling under its administrative control to submit the result percentage of class 10th and 12th of their schools and institutions within a week’s time.

The CEO has also said that the concerned shall also submit an application for release and sanction of Annual Increment which shall be released on the basis of performance achieved during the academic year 2022-23.

“The DDOs shall adopt same procedure for their subordinate staff and released Annual Increment accordingly,” it reads

Earlier, KNO has reported that the government will question and seek answers as well as reasons from the teachers of those public schools who have performed poorly in results of 10th and 12th standard.

Principal Secretary, School Education Department, Alok Kumar said that the department will provide such teachers with training so that they can improve their results.

“We will seek answers from teachers of those schools wherein the results of the 10th and 12th standard are not upto the standard,” Kumar said.

The principal secretary had further said that the department was aware of such schools. “We will take care of it.”

Pertinently, a number of government schools have performed poorly in the recently declared annual regular results of 10th and 12th standard—(KNO)
