WINGS — Women INspiring Growth in STEM Scholarship Program: Full Details, Eligibility, Benefits & Application Process (2025)

The path to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers has traditionally been challenging for young women due to limited resources, lack of representation, and financial constraints. Recognizing this need, IIT Bombay has introduced a transformative initiative—the WINGS — Women INspiring Growth in STEM Scholarship Program. Launched by IIT Bombay’s Distinguished Alumnus Bharat Desai and Neerja Sethi, this scholarship is designed to empower female undergraduate students by providing full tuition fee support and inspiring them to pursue STEM fields with confidence, curiosity, and purpose.

As one of the most prestigious scholarships offered exclusively for women at IIT Bombay, WINGS aims to create a strong foundation for academic excellence and gender diversity in the world of STEM. This article provides a complete, in-depth guide to the scholarship, including eligibility, benefits, important dates, application process, and why this initiative is so impactful for female STEM aspirants.

What Is the WINGS — Women INspiring Growth in STEM Scholarship Program?

The WINGS Scholarship is a philanthropic initiative started to support female undergraduate students at IIT Bombay who are pursuing academic programs in STEM disciplines. The primary vision of WINGS is to remove financial barriers for meritorious women and encourage them to excel in science and technology fields.

The scholarship ensures that talented young women, who may otherwise face financial limitations, can complete their education without the burden of tuition fees. With India witnessing a rapid rise in STEM opportunities, this program is expected to significantly improve women’s participation in research, innovation, engineering, and technology.

Objectives of the WINGS Scholarship Program

The initiative is built around several core goals:

1. Promote Women’s Participation in STEM

STEM fields remain heavily male-dominated across India and the world. WINGS aims to bridge this gap by providing financial support dedicated solely to women.

2. Encourage Merit and Academic Excellence

The scholarship requires students to maintain a CPI of 6.0 or above, ensuring that beneficiaries consistently perform well academically.

3. Support Economically Constrained Students

For many families, the tuition fees at IIT Bombay—among the top engineering institutes in India—can be difficult to afford. WINGS covers these costs entirely.

4. Create Future STEM Leaders

By encouraging more women to take up STEM, the initiative seeks to produce future scientists, engineers, research scholars, and innovators.

5. Inspire Confidence and Curiosity

More than just financial aid, WINGS aspires to uplift the mindset of young women so they enter the STEM ecosystem with purpose and ambition.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the WINGS — Women INspiring Growth in STEM Scholarship Program, a student must meet the following eligibility requirements:

Must maintain a CPI of 6.0 or above.

Academic consistency is mandatory for continued support.

These requirements ensure that the scholarship reaches deserving, meritorious candidates who can benefit the most from financial assistance.

Benefits: What Does the WINGS Scholarship Offer?

The WINGS Scholarship provides one of the most comprehensive financial benefits for IIT Bombay students.

🎓 Full Tuition Fee Support — ₹2,00,000 Per Annum

The program covers the complete tuition fee of selected students, amounting to ₹2 lakhs per year. Considering that IIT Bombay is one of India’s top-tier institutes with significant tuition costs, this support greatly reduces financial pressure on families.

J&K Cabinet Clears Major Reservation Shake-Up, Cuts EWS by 7% and RBA by 3%, Raising Open Merit Share by 10%, Sends Proposal to LG for Approval

Shake-up in J&K reservation policy

J&K cabinet clears proposal to slash EWS by 7% and RBA by 3%

Open Merit share to rise by 10%; Decision to be sent to LG for approval

Jammu, Dec 03: The Jammu & Kashmir cabinet on Wednesday greenlit a proposal to slash quotas in the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and Reserved Backward Area (RBA) categories to enhance the share of Open Merit (OM) by 10 percent.

Authoritative sources revealed to news agency Kashmir News Observer, that under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the cabinet approved a seven percent cut in the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) quota and a three percent cut in the Reserved Backward Area (RBA) quota. The shake-up is designed to boost the Open Merit share by a staggering 10 percent.

“The cabinet has implemented the sub-committee’s recommendations in toto,” they disclosed.

The Cabinet Sub-Committee (CSC) had recommended against tinkering with Scheduled Tribe-I, Scheduled Tribe-II, Scheduled Castes, Other Backward Classes, and Actual Line of Control/International Border categories.

The proposal will now be sent to the Lieutenant Governor for approval. If cleared, this decision is expected to enhance the OM share by 10 percent.

With this move, the Open Merit (OM) share would rise to 50 percent in vertical reservation.

The Lieutenant Governor may have to make a prior reference to the Union Government on the matter, as the Transaction of Business of the Government of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir Rules, 2019 mandate that the Lieutenant Governor shall consult the Central Government in the Ministry of Home Affairs, or the appropriate Ministry, with a copy to the Ministry of Home Affairs, in respect of cases that affect or are likely to affect the interests of any minority community, Scheduled Castes, or the Backward Classes.

Currently, the ST-I, ST-II, RBA, and EWS categories each have 10 percent reservation, while the Scheduled Castes and OBCs each have 8 percent, and the ALC/IB category has 4 percent reservation.

*Opposition parties, reservations*

The opposition parties are yet to react to the cabinet proposal.

The BJP said that they do not know what the cabinet has proposed and will comment only after the proposal is in the public domain. “It would be premature to comment on the issue at this juncture,” BJP spokesman Sunil Sethi told KNO.

MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi, one of the politicians spearheading the campaign for rationalisation, could not be contacted for comments.

Peoples Conference president Sajad Gani Lone, who was also advocating rationalisation of reservation, has also not reacted to the proposal but accused the government of pitting Kashmiris against each other. “I will reiterate that in the context of the reservations issue, the elected government is passing on the buck and trying to create a wedge in the Kashmiri ranks, pitting one Kashmiri against another,” he said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Lone said the elected government can easily restore district and divisional recruitment through an Act in the Assembly—(KNO)

Govt Made ‘Best Possible Effort’ to Restructure Reservation Policy: CM Omar

Srinagar, Dec 03: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said the government has undertaken a comprehensive exercise to rationalize Jammu and Kashmir’s reservation policy in accordance with commitments made to the public.

Speaking to reporters after chairing a cabinet meeting in Jammu, CM Omar as per news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC said the cabinet worked extensively on the matter and ensured that “no section faces any kind of injustice.”

“We have tried to rationalize the reservation policy exactly as we had assured the people. At the same time, every effort was made to ensure fairness to all,” Omar said.

CM Omar took a swipe at those accusing the government of inaction, saying the same groups are now threatening protests over the changes.

“Earlier they taunted us, claiming we had done nothing on reservation. Now, when work has been done, they say they will agitate. It is always easy to play politics over such issues,” he said.

Omar added that the administration had gone through an exhaustive process while examining the reservation policy.

“We could not have taken this exercise any further than we already have. Every aspect was scrutinized thoroughly,” he said.

“The subject has come to the cabinet three or four times, and the cabinet sub-committee spent six months completing its work,” Omar said without indulging anymore details.

“The matter will now be forwarded to the Lieutenant Governor. I cannot share the details at this stage,” he said. —(KNC)
