Hajj flights from Srinagar to begin April 18; 4,704 pilgrims to depart

โ€˜Each pilgrim to get SIM-enabled smartwatch for tracking, coordinationโ€™

Srinagar: Hajj flights from Srinagar are scheduled to commence from April 18 and continue till May 20, with a total of 4,704 pilgrims from Jammu and Kashmir set to undertake the pilgrimage this year.

Executive Officer of the Hajj Committee, Dr Shujat Ahmed, informed the news agencyโ€”Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that 3,990 pilgrims will depart via Srinagar embarkation, including 323 from Ladakh, while 1,000 pilgrims will travel through Delhi and 50 through Mumbai.

He said the flights will operate for around 10โ€“15 days from Srinagar, with schedules subject to adjustments due to operational requirements.

Ahmed said new guidelines issued by Saudi authorities include stricter health screening, under which pilgrims with serious conditions such as renal failure, those on dialysis, or with cardiac issues have been screened out.

“Self-cooking facilities have been discontinued this year, and pilgrims will instead be provided food arrangements,” he said, adding that each pilgrim will be issued a smartwatch with a SIM-enabled tracking system for monitoring and coordination purposes.

Due to ongoing repair work at Srinagar airport, flights will operate with reduced passenger capacity, leading to refuelling halts in Delhi before proceeding to Madinah, the officer said.

He said the luggage allowance has also been reduced from 40 kg to 25 kg.

Ahmed said accommodation facilities have been arranged at the Hajj House for pilgrims arriving from distant areas, including Jammu and Ladakh, allowing them to stay ahead of their scheduled departuresโ€”(KNO)

Rising Stress Crisis in Kashmir: Experts Link Surge to Unemployment, Academic Pressure & Financial Struggles

Unemployment, academic pressure, financial instability driving stress surge in Kashmir: Experts

โ€˜Seeking help not sign of weakness but step toward recovery

Srinagar: Stress, once considered a temporary emotional response, is increasingly emerging as a silent public health concern in Kashmir, with doctors warning that a growing number of people, especially youth, are grappling with its long-term consequences.

Medical experts say that stress, triggered by social, economic, and psychological pressures, is no longer limited to specific groups but is affecting people across all age brackets.

โ€œStress is essentially the bodyโ€™s natural response to pressure or perceived threats, but when it becomes chronic, it can severely impact both mental and physical health,โ€ Dr Murtaza Khan, a physician, told the news agencyโ€”Kashmir News Observer (KNO).

He explained that while short-term stress can sometimes enhance performance, prolonged exposure leads to serious complications. โ€œWe are witnessing a surge in patients complaining of headaches, hypertension, sleep disturbances, and fatigue, all of which are directly or indirectly linked to unmanaged stress,โ€ he added.

Doctors attribute the rise in stress levels to a combination of factors, including unemployment, academic pressure, financial instability, and social challenges.

Dr Javid Ahmad Reshie, speaking to KNO, said that modern lifestyle patterns and excessive screen time are also contributing significantly.

โ€œPeople today are constantly exposed to information overload, social comparison, and uncertainty about the future. These factors collectively create a state of persistent anxiety,โ€ he said. โ€œIn Kashmir, additional socio-political stressors further aggravate the situation.โ€

Health experts warn that if left unaddressed, stress can evolve into severe health conditions.

โ€œChronic stress weakens the immune system and increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression,โ€ Dr Reshie said. โ€œWe are also seeing behavioural changes like irritability, social withdrawal, and substance misuse.โ€

Doctors said that stress not only affects individuals but also disrupts family life, work productivity, and overall societal well-being.

Experts said that while stress cannot be completely eliminated, it can be effectively managed through simple lifestyle changes.

โ€œRegular physical activity, balanced diet, and adequate sleep are the first steps toward stress management,โ€ Dr Khan said. โ€œPractices like meditation, deep breathing, and mindfulness can significantly reduce stress levels.โ€

Dr Reshie stressed the importance of social support and open communication. โ€œPeople should not hesitate to talk about their problems. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness but a step toward recovery,โ€ he said.

Doctors have called for greater awareness around mental health, urging institutions and communities to promote stress management programs.

โ€œThere is still stigma associated with mental health issues. Early intervention and counselling can prevent stress from turning into serious disorders,โ€ Dr Reshie addedโ€”(KNO)
