Govt slashes excise duty on petrol to Rs 3/litre, exempts diesel to shield consumers from global crude price rise

New Delhi, Mar 27: The government has slashed excise duty on petrol to Rs 3 a litre and exempted diesel from the duty as it seeks to shield consumers from the impact of rising global crude prices amid the ongoing war in the Middle East.

Global crude prices have risen by almost 50 per cent since the United States and Israel launched military strikes against Iran on February 28, triggering sweeping retaliation from Tehran.

In a notification issued late on March 26, the Finance Ministry cut excise duty to Rs 3 a litre, from Rs 13 a litre earlier, while the levy on diesel has been slashed to nil from Rs 10 earlier. The duty cuts are effective immediately, the ministry said.

Despite the spike in international prices, retail pump rates have not been changed putting a strain on finances of oil companies.

To give relief to oil companies, the government has cut excise duty on petrol and diesel.

Tracking the excise duty cut notification, shares of fuel retailers IOC, BPCL and HPCL opened higher on BSE.

Rating agency ICRA, in a note on Thursday, had said if the average crude oil price goes up to USD 100-105/bbl, fuel retailers would incur a loss of Rs 11 per litre on petrol and Rs 14 per litre on diesel, respectively.

ICRA had also said that the government may reduce excise duty rates on petrol and diesel to keep retail sale prices stable at existing levels, giving oil companies more headroom to collect additional revenue to compensate for refining losses.

International oil prices touched USD 119 per barrel earlier this month on the intensifying Iran war, before pulling back to around USD 100 a barrel.

India imports 88 per cent of its crude oil needs and roughly half of its natural gas requirement. These mostly come via the Strait of Hormuz.

Following the US and Israeli attacks on Iranian government, military and nuclear facilities, Iran warned shipping away from the strait, and insurers withdrew coverage, effectively halting tanker movements.

Nayara Energy, which operates 6,967 of India’s 102,075 petrol pumps, has decided to pass on part of the increase in input costs to consumers and has raised petrol prices by Rs 5/litre and diesel by Rs 3/litre. Petrol at Nayara pumps now costs Rs 100.71 a litre and diesel costs Rs 91.31 per litre.

Jio-bp, the fuel retailing joint venture of Reliance Industries and BP Plc that owns 2,185 outlets, has, however, so far not raised prices despite incurring heavy losses on the sale of petrol and diesel.

State-owned fuel retailers, who control about 90 per cent of the market, continue to keep rates frozen. A litre of normal petrol in Delhi continues to cost Rs 94.77, while the same grade diesel comes for Rs 87.67 a litre.–(PTI)

NHAI Summer Internship Programme 2026: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has opened applications for its two-month Summer Internship Programme 2026, offering students hands-on experience on National Highway projects across the country. Interested and eligible candidates can apply through the official NHAI Internship Portal at internshipsatnhai.digitalindiacorporation.in until April 15, 2026.

The internship is scheduled from May 4 to July 5, 2026, and now spans multiple disciplines, including Civil Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Data Science/Artificial Intelligence, as well as non-technical streams such as Law (BA LLB), Commerce, Sciences (BA/BCom/BSc), Management (MBA in HR, Finance, Marketing), Mass Communication, and Library Science.

Selected interns will work under the guidance of experienced professionals at NHAI headquarters and field offices, gaining practical exposure to India’s infrastructure development ecosystem. They will receive a stipend of Rs 20,000 per month and a certificate upon completion.

Eligibility

Full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students from premier institutions, including NIRF-ranked institutes, leading law universities, top management schools, and reputed mass communication institutes, are eligible to apply.

Application Process

Applications must be submitted online via the NHAI Internship Portal, where students will provide academic and personal details and indicate project location preferences.

Institutes are responsible for verifying and approving student applications. Only institute-approved applications will be considered for selection.

The final allocation of interns to projects will be undertaken by NHAI based on preferences and availability, according to the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways.

The earlier phase of the programme, launched in December 2025, witnessed strong participation: 244 civil engineering students undertook the one-month winter internship, and 149 students enrolled in the six-month term internship from January to June 2026. Building on this success, the expanded Summer Internship Programme aims to further develop a skilled workforce for India’s infrastructure sector.

Srinagar, Mar 26: The Centre has said that 96,476 workers from Jammu and Kashmir have been enrolled under the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-dhan (PM-SYM) scheme aimed at providing old-age pension to unorganised sector workers.

Replying to an unstarred question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Labour and Employment Shobha Karandlaje, as reported by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said that the scheme, launched in 2019, offers a minimum assured pension of Rs 3,000 per month to beneficiaries after attaining the age of 60 years.

The minister said that the scheme is voluntary and contributory in nature, wherein eligible workers aged between 18 and 40 years with a monthly income of up to Rs 15,000 can enrol by contributing between Rs 55 and Rs 200 per month, with an equal matching contribution from the Central Government.

As per official data, Jammu and Kashmir has recorded 96,476 registrations under the scheme so far, reflecting participation from the unorganised workforce in the Union Territory.

The government said that enrolment is being facilitated through Common Service Centres (CSCs) and online platforms, while several measures have been taken to expand coverage, including awareness campaigns in local languages and integration with the e-Shram portal.

It added that a nationwide special registration drive has also been conducted in two phases, with the rural phase currently underway till March 31, 2026, to boost enrolment among unorganised workers, including those in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Centre reiterated that continuous efforts are being made in coordination with UT administrations to widen the social security net and ensure pension coverage to eligible workers—(KNO)

Anantnag, Mar 27: Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag has suspended three employees pending an enquiry into alleged negligence in patient care following an incident reported on March 26.

Details available with news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC, The suspended officials include the Incharge Store Keeper, Incharge Pharmacist, and a Staff Nurse posted in the Surgery Ward.

The action comes after serious allegations surfaced that expired glucose was administered to patients, triggering concern over safety standards.

Medical Superintendent of MMABM Associated Hospital, Dr. Arshad Hassan Siddiqui, as per KNC said that a detailed investigation has been initiated and responsibility will be fixed at the earliest. He asserted that the institution maintains zero tolerance towards any compromise in patient care and safety.

Meanwhile, attendants of patients alleged that some individuals developed adverse reactions soon after being administered intravenous glucose. They claimed that upon checking, the glucose bottles were found to have expired nearly a year ago.

“This is sheer negligence and could have put lives at risk,” an attendant said, demanding strict action against those responsible.

Family members further alleged that the incident reflects a larger systemic failure in monitoring and managing medical supplies. They questioned how expired stock reached the ward and called for a thorough probe into procurement and storage mechanisms.

The attendants have urged authorities to take stringent action, including suspension of all involved personnel and blacklisting of the supplier if found guilty. They also demanded regular audits of medicines and consumables in government hospitals to prevent recurrence of such incidents. (KNC)
