Omar Abdullah Urges Election Commission to Restore Democracy in J&K, Calls for Announcement of LS and Assembly Poll Dates

EC must restore democracy in J&K, announce dates for LS, assembly polls: Omar Abdullah

Srinagar, Mar 15 (PTI) The Election Commission of India (ECI) should play its role in restoring democracy in Jammu and Kashmir and announce dates for both Parliament as well as assembly polls in the Union Territory, National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah said here on Friday.

“We have no expectations from the Election Commission. The EC should play its role as part of its mission of maintaining democracy. It has been 10 years that J-K has not seen an assembly election,” Abdullah told reporters here.

Referring to the submission of a report by former President Ram Nath Kovind-led committee on ‘one nation one election, the former J-K chief minister said it was a golden opportunity to start the policy from J-K.

“The former president has submitted a report on ‘one nation, one election’. What can we hope for from them: drum-beating ‘one nation one election’ if you do not start from J-K. Is it to fool the people? “There have to be elections in J-K and it is a golden opportunity. Let them restore democracy fully here and announce the dates of both Parliament as well as assembly elections,” he added.

Asked whether the Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) would be meeting in the coming days to sort out its differences, Abdullah said the question should be put to the office bearers of the alliance.

“If there is (a meeting), you ask (alliance president) Farooq Abdullah. I am not an office bearer in the PAGD, I belong to NC. Ask those who hold an office in the PAGD,” he said.

Asked when the party would announce its candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, the NC leader said “whenever we wish to.” (PTI)

Big News Regarding consumption of watermelons in Kashmir

Watermelons in Kashmir ‘Safe for Consumption’, Expert Test Confirms

SRINAGAR: The Food Safety Department of Kashmir on Thursday rebuked the claims as baseless about premature ripening of watermelons with the use of chemicals and assured that the department remains committed to maintaining stringent food safety standards.

Deputy Commissioner Food Safety Department Shugufta Jalal said that the experts, who specialise in food technology, have conducted rigorous tests across the region and that the claims of premature ripening are baseless.

She said that the tests include both surveillance and indepth analysis using advanced equipment, and the results have confirmed that the watermelons are safe for consumption.

She said that the watermelons are grown throughout the year in various parts of India due to the country’s diverse climatic conditions which makes the fruit available in all seasons, contrary to the claims that it is not a seasonal fruit.

Shagufta said that the department has been proactive with teams deployed and mobile testing vans stationed in key areas across Kashmir to conduct on the spot testing.

She criticized the oncologist for not consulting with the authorities before making public statements as such remarks have caused undue distress among the population.

“The department remains committed to maintaining stringent food safety standards and preventing misinformation from causing panic. We continue to monitor the situation closely and are dedicated to communicating transparently with the public to uphold trust and ensure the health and safety of all consumers,” she said.

The controversy erupted after a social media post by a doctor went viral, suggesting that watermelons available in the market were artificially ripened using chemicals.

The claim raised alarm among consumers, as watermelons are a staple fruit during Ramadan, often consumed during Iftar. (KNS)

Common Curriculum | BOSE tightens noose against private schools over poor adherence to orders

Srinagar, Mar 14:  The J&K Board of School Education (BOSE) has tightened its noose against the private schools over poor implementation of the orders for adopting the BOSE-published textbooks for all classes from the 2024-25 academic session.

In the latest development, Deputy Secretary BOSE issued circular instructions to all the officers at sub-offices to conduct inspections of the private schools and ascertain the reports about the implementation status of BOSE-prescribed textbooks by private schools for the academic session 2024-25.

The BOSE said that non-compliance by any school may lead to penal action against such defaulting institutions.

The BOSE has made it mandatory for all private schools to adopt the BOSE-prescribed textbooks for all classes from primary to class 12th.

The orders have been issued by the BOSE using its powers vested under the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education Act, 1975.

“Under the act, BOSE holds the authority to prescribe courses of instruction, curricula, syllabi, and textbooks for various academic levels including pre-primary, elementary, secondary, and higher secondary school examinations,” the circular reads.

However, the Deputy Secretary BOSE said that despite these regulations, some private academic institutions have been observed deviating from the prescribed materials, opting instead for self-devised curricula and unauthorised textbooks from private publishers.

“This violation not only creates inconvenience for students and parents who struggle to access the required learning material but also undermines the meticulous efforts invested by the BOSE in designing curriculum and textbooks to meet educational standards,” the circular instruction reads.

The BOSE said that such practices not only disrupt the educational ecosystem but also result in financial losses for JKBOSE, as substantial resources are expended in developing educational content.

“The unchecked defiance exhibited by certain private schools not only compromises the quality of education but also sets a detrimental precedent, potentially fostering a culture of non-compliance among other stakeholders,” it reads.

In wake of this, the BOSE has instructed all the district and tehsil-level officials to rigorously monitor and ensure the implementation of JKBOSE-prescribed textbooks in private academic institutions within their jurisdictions for the academic session 2024-25.

Also, the officials have been instructed to ensure strict adherence to all directives issued in this regard.

“Any instances of non-compliance are to be promptly reported, and a list of defaulting institutions is to be furnished for further necessary action,” it reads. (GK)
