Irfan Pathan Danced With Rashid Khan After Afghanistan’s Epic Win Over Pakistan

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan was seen dancing joyfully along with Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan at the Chepauk ground after Afghanistan recorded a historic, first-ever ODI match win against Pakistan in their World Cup 2023 encounter on Monday in Chennai.

After losing to Pakistan in 7 ODI matches previously, two of them in very tight games, Afghanistan finally kept their nerves to complete a tall chase in Chennai to cause their second upset of the tournament, having defeated England in Delhi 8 days ago.

Both Afghanistan and Pakistan now have 4 points each (2 wins) in 5 games. This win for Afghanistan meant that they jumped in the middle of the points table and England went down to the bottom position, with just one win in 4 games.

After the victory, the Afghanistan players and support staff did a lap of honor at the Chepauk and the Chennai crowd gave them a standing ovation.

Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan, who has often shown his support for the Afghanistan cricket team, danced with Rashid Khan on the ground. Irfan Pathan was on the ground, near the boundary line, for his broadcasting duties when Rashid and his teammates were doing a lap of honor. When Irfan Pathan saw Rashid Khan, both got involved in a brief dance which they both clearly enjoyed very much.

Talking about the game, it was a complete, team performance from Afghanistan.

Wrist-spinner Noor Ahmad was brought in the side specifically for this game, and he delivered on his World Cup debut, picking up a three-wicket haul – taking wickets of Babar Azam, Shafique, and Rizwan. Babar top-scored with 74, Shafique scored 58, and Shadab and Iftikhar scored 40 runs each to take Pakistan to a total of 282.

Many thought that this total would be enough for Pakistan to defend. However, Afghanistan had other plans. And very solid plans. Their batters remained steady throughout their chase and never panicked, as they had done on previous occasions.

Their top three all scored half-centuries: Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored 65 runs, Ibrahim Zadran scored 87 runs, and Rahmat Shah scored 77 unbeaten runs. Captain and number 4 Hashmatullah Shahidi also played superbly to score 48* runs in 45 balls. Ibrahim Zadran was picked as the Player of the Match.

‘Don’t force us to go for strike’

Jahangeer Ganaie

Srinagar, Oct 23 (KNO): The postgraduate resident doctors at Government Medical College Srinagar are suffering due to non-payment of their monthly stipends.

The Diplomate of National Board is a postgraduate Master’s degree same as the MD/MS degree awarded to Specialist Doctors in India after the completion of a three-year residency.

Talking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) the PG resident doctors said they haven’t received their stipends since July this year due to which they have been suffering.

“We have been pursuing PG courses since last year and have been facing such issues since the last three months,” they said, adding, “We are around 400 PG residents of second and third year without monthly stipends. We have families who are dependent on us and without stipends, we are even unable to make our ends meet.”

They said despite taking up this issue with higher officials of GMC Srinagar but no positive response has come from any side.

“Every official is assuring us verbally that the stipends will be released soon but as of now nothing has been done,” they said.

“We are now fed up with the assurances and if the government fails to issue our stipends then there is no option other than to go for strike that will definitely affect patient care delivery services,” they said.

They further added that only PG residents are without stipends while other staff have been getting salaries on time.

They have requested the higher-ups to look into the matter at the earliest “so that our families don’t suffer anymore”.

An official of the GMC said they have taken up the issue with higher-ups and the stipends of resident doctors will be released in the next few days—(KNO)

KU faces shortage of non-teaching staff, over 500 posts vacant since 2016

KU faces shortage of non-teaching staff, over 500 posts vacant since 2016

Suhail Bhat

SRINAGAR Oct 22: The University of Kashmir is grappling with a shortage of non-teaching staff, with over 500 positions remaining vacant since 2016 due to lack of recruitment. The staff deficiency is directly impacting the Varsity’s ability to fulfil its academic and administrative responsibilities.

University officials privy to the details said that out of the total 2,450 sanctioned non-teaching positions, including those on satellite campuses, only 1,900 are currently occupied. The remaining 550 positions have been vacant since 2016, primarily due to retirement of employees.

This issue is compounded by an annual exodus of 70-80 non-teaching employees retiring, further exacerbating the staffing vacuum. Several university departments are particularly hard-hit by this crisis, notably the Watch and Ward section, sanitation, hostels, examination wing, and landscape division, all of which are grappling with 30-40 vacancies each.

The administrative block, Alama Iqbal Library, and the research centre are also affected, with nearly 100 technical positions remaining unoccupied. These vacant positions encompass roles such as laboratory assistants, lab attendants, junior technical assistants, professional assistants and computer assistants.

The vacancies have significantly impacted the science department, hampering critical research work. “Some heads of departments have had to engage ad hoc assistants to compensate for the staff shortage, while in other cases, HODs are forced to take on clerical duties due to the lack of essential support,” a senior Professor said.

The issue extends to the Physical Education Department, where critical roles, including the women’s gym coach and sports assistant, remain unfilled, posing risks to the safety of female students. “If the current trend of positions going vacant continues, it is projected that nearly 50 percent of positions will remain unoccupied,” a Professor said.

He said that non-teaching staff members play a vital role in the university’s operations and research activities. However, he said, this issue has been neglected since 2016, with no recruitment efforts taking place.

Despite the university’s efforts to address the issue by advertising nearly 80 positions in May this year, an official revealed that the recruitment process has seen limited progress. “The university released various notices this year to fill up multiple vacancies, including Junior Assistants, Legal Assistants and Research Assistants. However, the process has stagnated for undisclosed reasons,” he said. He added that non-teaching positions typically follow a straightforward procedure involving only a written test, with no interviews required.

The delay in the recruitment process has led to growing frustration among applicants, who anxiously await the scheduling of examinations and the finalisation of appointments. “I have been diligently preparing for the exams over the past five months, but unfortunately, there have been no significant developments. I sincerely hope that the recruitment process is expedited to alleviate the concerns of aspiring candidates,” one such applicant from Budgam said.

Nelofar Khan, Vice Chancellor of the University, said that her top priority is to fill the vacant posts. “We were busy with the University convocation, and now that we have successfully completed it, we will begin filling up the vacant posts from next month,” she added
