Rs 86,000 crore investment proposal received in J&K so far: LG Manoj Sinha

Says projects worth Rs 1250 crore made functional in last six months, cold storage capacity in J&K being enhanced

Jahangeer Ganaie

Pulwama, Oct 29 (KNO): Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday said that the Union Territory has received investment proposal Rs 86,000 crore so far.

While addressing a gathering after inaugration of 12 CA cold storage, the LG as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said that in the last six months projects worth Rs 1250 crore have been inaugurated in J&K while 269 projects are in pipeline that will generate employment opportunities for around 16000 people.

He said that the storage units inaugurated today will prove beneficial for fruits growers as it will give them time to sell their produce as per market demand.

“Capacity of these units is around 6,000 metric ton and it will provide employment to around 600 people. There is more potential of units and government is making efforts to enhance the storage capacity in J&K.”

He added that government is working to support growers from seed to market besides special emphasis is being laid towards smart and digital agriculture.

LG said that post harvesting issues of the farmers are being also redressed besides panchayat level meeting are being also held to train farmers so that they won’t face any problems.

“In J&K cold storage units remain occupied for almost a year as there are different varieties of fruits available so investment in CA stores is a safe business while incentives in J&K are higher than any state in J&K,” he added.

He said that Rs 86,000 crore proposals have been received and administration is working to provide them land and other support so that it will benefit more and more people.

Industries department has notified new policies so that more people will invest here and more people will get benefited, the LG said, adding that National Single Window System has been integrated only in J&K while 182 services are available online—(KNO)

Srinagar, Oct 28 (KNO): Rayees Ahmad, from Khanyar, Srinagar has made the entire Jammu & Kashmir proud by winning a bronze medal at the senior national category of Pencak Silat, held during the national games in Goa.

MoE approves installation of sanitary pad vending, incinerator machines in over 1000 Govt schools of J&K

Riyaz Bhat

Srinagar, Oct 28 (KNO): In order to break the taboos and myths associated with menstruation, Ministry of Education (MoE) has approved installation of sanitary pad vending and incinerator machines in more than 1000 government-run-schools of Jammu and Kashmir.

Under the centrally sponsored scheme Samargra Shiksha, officials have said that it will start Installing and commissioning of ‘Sanitary Pad Vending Machines and Incinerator Machines in 1025 designated schools of J&K approved during previous year under Samagra Shiksha.

In an official communique to Chief Education Officers (CEO) of Jammu and Kashmir, Samagra official has said said, “At least 1025 government schools including 74 KGBVs and 951 High and Higher Secondary schools were approved by MoE for Installation of Sanitary Pad Vending Machines and Incinerator Machines in designated schools of J&K approved as spill over under Samagra Shiksha.”

According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the concerned authorities will begin installation and commissioning of incinerator in coming days.

As per study in India only 12 percent of women use Sanitary Napkins.

It is observed that 20 percent of girls did not use toilet in school during menstruation for fear of staining it, and many girls had no idea about menstruation when they started with their periods.

Of those who had some idea, only 16 percent received any information in school.

The concerned officials of Samagra Shiksha Jammu and Kashmir has accordingly request the CEOs to instruct the Head of the Institutions (Hols) of the designated schools to finalize a suitable position and location for mounting the equipment within school premises along with availability of 6Amp AC socket preferably with uninterrupted power supply.

“Schools where Electrical fitting is not available, the expenditure incurred on it shall be met from school electric fund and Annual School Grant,” it reads—(KNO)

Student strength nose-dives at KU’s satellite campuses, no takers for newly-introduced courses

Student strength nose-dives at KU’s satellite campuses, no takers for newly-introduced courses

Srinagar, Oct 28 (KNO): Like its main campus, the Kashmir University’s satellite campuses in north and south Kashmir are witnessing a massive dip in student admissions, even as newly-introduced courses are finding no takers despite being introduced with much fanfare.

According to official sources, the North Campus at Baramulla introduced, from this academic session, an integrated BSc-MSc programme in Botany.

Against the intake capacity of around 40 seats, only 16 candidates came forward for the admission, leaving over 50 percent seats vacant, they told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO).

Similarly, the University introduced integrated BA-MA in Arabic at Kupwara Campus, from this academic year.

Despite throwing the admission open for even 10+2 level students, only five candidates came forward for admission, rendering the course virtually paralytic to be started on the desired lines. The situation with M.Ed course being offered at North Campus Baramulla is similarly dismal, with more than 80 percent seats still vacant despite admission dates being extended continuously.

One faculty member at North Campus told KNO that these newly-introduced courses were started without any serious background exercise and research on their viability.

“The University Council headed by LG clearly directed the University authorities to start new courses only after assessing their viability. But just to score a few brownie points, the University authorities went ahead with these courses, only to be left red-faced by no takers,” the faculty member wishing anonymity said.

KU’s main campus is already facing a steady decline in student admissions, forcing the University to make a call for “open and spot admissions” in a bid to fill up the vacant seats.

The admissions in several courses have dipped by 50 to 80 percent across campuses. The situation with Institute of Technology Zakura Campus is worse, with almost all its branches seeing a steep dip in admissions this year.

“There is no serious effort being made to assess and address this problem which has dented the University’s perception in the public eyes. An institution devoid of students is a dead institution,” said an assistant professor at IOT Zakura.

The Assistant Professor said making a call for spot admissions to fill up vacant seats in relaxation of admission norms only reflects poorly on the reputation of the institution which claims to be Grade A+.

Many teachers argue that KU’s Chancellor should appoint a high level committee of academicians from different parts of the country to come up with tangible solutions for declining student strength in the Varsity.

Otherwise, they said, the University will see further decline in its academic standards which will only impair its growth and progression—(KNO)
