Indian Universities to Offer Admissions Twice a Year: Complete Details Here

Colleges in India can admit students twice a year from the 2024-25 academic session, following a big decision taken by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to give more flexibility to Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Admissions can either be offered in January-February or July-August from the new academic year.

The colleges offering programmes both online and in physical mode can now admit students twice a year.

While offering biannual admissions is not mandatory, the flexibility has been provided to the colleges who want to increase their student intake and offer new programmes in emerging areas. The institutions will need to make suitable amendments to their rules to open admissions twice a year, according to the UGC.

UGC had earlier allowed biannual admissions under Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and online modes.

Currently, higher education institutions admit students in one academic session, which starts in July-August and ends in May-June.

After UGC permitted two-cycle admissions for online or distance learning, there was a significant rise in the number of enrolments, according to officials. A total of 19,73,056 students enrolled in July 2022, with an additional 4,28,854 students in January 2023. The numbers showed that a second academic session in a year enabled nearly half a million students to join the degree programmes of their choice without waiting a full academic year.

Sharing some insights on how the decision will benefit the students, UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar, said, “If Indian universities can offer admission twice a year, it will benefit many students. Such as those who missed admission to a university in the July-August session due to a delay in the announcement of board results, health issues, or personal reasons. Biannual university admissions will also keep students motivated since they do not have to wait one full year to be admitted if they miss admission in the current cycle.”

Supreme Court Sends Notice Regarding Plea Seeking Cancellation of NEET-UG 2024 Exam

Supreme Court issues notice on plea demanding cancellation of NEET-UG 2024.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a notice to the National Testing Agency (NTA) in response to a plea demanding the cancellation of the NEET-UG 2024 examination due to alleged paper leaks and irregularities. The plea, filed by ten NEET candidates, seeks a fresh examination, arguing that the integrity of the test has been compromised. The court’s vacation bench, comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah, highlighted the seriousness of the issue, stating, “Sanctity has been affected, we need answers.” The court has scheduled the matter for further hearing on July 8.

The petitioners claim that the NEET-UG 2024 examination, held on May 5 and whose results were declared on June 4, was marred by significant malpractices. They allege that paper leaks occurred, providing an unfair advantage to certain candidates. This, they argue, violates Article 14 of the Indian Constitution, which guarantees the right to equality, as it undermines the fairness and integrity of the examination process. The petition emphasizes that the alleged irregularities have severely affected the credibility of the exam, necessitating a fresh and fair conduct of the test.

Despite the serious allegations, the Supreme Court refused to halt the ongoing counselling process for admissions to MBBS, BDS, and other related courses for successful candidates. The bench firmly stated, “We will not stop the counselling. If you argue further, we will dismiss this.” This decision ensures that the admission process continues without interruption, even as the court seeks to address the concerns raised by the petitioners about the examination’s conduct.

The NEET-UG examination, conducted by the NTA, is a crucial test for admissions to various medical and dental courses in both government and private institutions across India. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for the candidates who appeared for the exam and the overall credibility of the NEET-UG examination process. As the court awaits the NTA’s response and prepares for the next hearing, the issue remains a critical topic of discussion within the educational and legal communities.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a notice to the National Testing Agency (NTA) seeking a response to the plea seeking fresh National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) undergraduate (UG) examination 2024 (NEET-UG 2024) over alleged paper leak and irregularities.

“Sanctity has been affected, we need answers,” the top court’s vacation bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah said, as it tagged the petition filed by 10 NEET candidates.

The court also refused to stay the counselling process for admissions in MBBS, BDS, and other courses for successful candidates.

“We will not stop the counselling. If you argue further, we will dismiss this,” the court said.

The matter has been listed for further hearing on July 8.

The plea alleged that NEET-UG, 2024, was riddled with malpractices, as the petitioners had learned of various instances of paper leaks. The alleged paper leak was violative of Article 14 (right to equality) under the Constitution as it gave an undue advantage to some candidates over others who chose to attempt the examination in a fair manner, it said.
